She Called Her a Leech—Now Her Daughter Was the Only One Welcome Inside
Part 2
Clara’s jaw tightened, but she said nothing.
For the first time since Mercy had known her, there was no sarcasm in her eyes. No superiority. No carefully disguised contempt.
Only desperation.
Mercy looked at the little girl again.
She couldn’t have been older than six.
She was soaked from the rain, hugging a faded stuffed rabbit with one ear missing.
The child gave Mercy a timid smile.
“My name is Grace,” she whispered.
Mercy’s heart softened for a split second.
Then another memory crashed into her.
Five years earlier…
She had stood outside Emmanuel’s gate carrying nothing but two bags and a folder filled with hospital bills.
Their mother had just died.
Mercy had spent every penny she had trying to save her.
She had nowhere else to go.
Emmanuel opened the door with a smile.
“Mercy! Why didn’t you call?”
Before she could answer, Clara appeared behind him.
Her smile disappeared the moment she noticed the suitcases.
“What’s this?”
“I… I just need somewhere to stay for a little while.”
Clara folded her arms.
“So you’ve come to live off us?”
“No…”
“It’s only until I find another job.”
Clara laughed.
“A job?”
She looked Mercy up and down.
“You’ve always depended on someone else.”
Mercy felt her cheeks burn.
“I’ve never asked you for anything.”
“No,” Clara replied.
“You just make people feel guilty until they offer.”
Emmanuel shifted awkwardly.
“Clara…”
But she wasn’t finished.
“I warned you this would happen.”
She pointed directly at Mercy.
“She’s a leech.”
The word landed harder than a slap.
Mercy looked at her brother.
Waiting.
Waiting for him to defend her.
To remind his wife that Mercy had helped pay for his university tuition.
That she had worked two jobs so he could finish school.
That she had skipped meals so he wouldn’t have to.
Instead…
Emmanuel sighed.
“I think… maybe Clara has a point.”
Mercy’s entire world stopped.
“What?”
“You’ve relied on this family for too long.”
She stared at him in disbelief.
“I relied on this family?”
Her voice cracked.
“I practically raised you.”
“I know.”
“But things are different now.”
Clara crossed her arms with satisfaction.
“You need to learn to stand on your own.”
Mercy looked from one face to the other.
Slowly…
She bent down, picked up her bags, and walked back toward the gate.
No one stopped her.
Not even Emmanuel.
As she reached the road, she heard Clara’s final words drifting through the open door.
“She’ll come back.”
“People like her always do.”
Back in the present…
The rain continued pouring.
Mercy stared at the two people standing on her doorstep.
Life had changed in ways none of them could have imagined.
The woman they once called a burden now owned one of the largest interior design firms in the city.
The brother who had once looked down on her had lost everything.
Neither of them spoke.
Until Grace tugged gently on Clara’s sleeve.
“Mommy…”
“I’m cold.”
Mercy closed her eyes.
She wasn’t angry with the child.
She never could be.
But forgiving adults…
That was another story.
Without a word, she stepped aside from the doorway.
Emmanuel looked up hopefully.
Before he could move, Mercy spoke.
“Grace can come inside.”
The smile on the little girl’s face appeared instantly.
Then Mercy looked directly at Emmanuel and Clara.
“You two…”
Her voice was calm.
“…stay exactly where you are.”
To be continued…
