Her Ex Thought She’d Arrive Broken—Then His Billionaire Boss Called Her

Part 2

I looked at my boys.

They were my everything.

How could I explain that the man who used to kiss them goodnight now wanted to parade them through a wedding like trophies? How could I tell them their father wasn’t inviting them because he missed them, but because he wanted an audience?

I forced another smile.

“Maybe,” I said softly. “We’ll see.”

Leo grinned.

“Will Daddy be there?”

The question pierced straight through my chest.

“Yes.”

“Can we wear our little suits?”

I nodded before excusing myself to the bathroom, where I locked the door and let the tears come.

Not because I missed Mark.

Those tears had dried up months ago.

I cried because my sons still believed their father was a hero.

The next morning, my best friend Rachel stormed into my apartment carrying coffee and enough energy to wake the dead.

“You look awful,” she announced.

“Good morning to you too.”

She noticed the invitation on the counter before I could hide it.

“Oh… no.”

She read it silently.

By the time she reached the handwritten note, her face had turned bright red.

“Bring a date… if you can find one?” she read aloud. “That arrogant piece of—”

“I know.”

Rachel slammed the card onto the table.

“You’re not going.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

She folded her arms.

“Good.”

But something inside me refused to let the matter rest.

For eighteen months, Mark had rewritten our story.

According to him, he had rescued himself from a miserable marriage.

According to him, I was bitter.

According to him, Tiffany was his soulmate.

He had stolen my confidence, my reputation, and nearly my future.

And now he wanted one last public performance.

Rachel narrowed her eyes.

“What are you thinking?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s the face you make before doing something dangerous.”

I laughed for the first time in weeks.

“Maybe I’m just tired of letting him control the ending.”

Three days later, I received another surprise.

The phone rang while I was folding laundry.

“Hello?”

“Elena?”

The deep voice sounded familiar.

Very familiar.

“This is Richard Dawson.”

I froze.

Richard Dawson.

CEO of Sterling Global.

Mark’s boss.

The most powerful man in the company.

My heart skipped.

“It’s been a long time,” he said warmly.

“I heard about your divorce.”

“I… yes.”

“I’ve wanted to call for months.”

I couldn’t understand why.

Richard had attended our anniversary party years earlier.

He’d always treated me kindly, but we had never been close.

“I’m sorry for what happened,” he continued.

“And I wanted to thank you.”

“For what?”

There was a brief silence.

“For saving my daughter’s life.”

My breath caught.

His daughter.

Emily.

Eight years earlier, during a company charity gala, little Emily had wandered toward the hotel swimming pool unnoticed.

Everyone had panicked.

Everyone except me.

I’d jumped in without thinking.

By the time security arrived, Emily was coughing in my arms.

Richard had hugged me that night with tears in his eyes.

I’d almost forgotten about it.

Apparently…

He never had.

“I’ve never forgotten what you did,” Richard said quietly.

“If there’s ever anything you need… you only have to ask.”

I stared at the wedding invitation lying on the kitchen table.

An idea—reckless, impossible, almost unbelievable—began to form.

Maybe…

Just maybe…

Mark had forgotten exactly who I was.

To be continued…
