What Roman gladiators actually did to female prisoners after their victories!

PART 2:

That was their intended purpose, and no gladiator was allowed to disturb this public spectacle.  But there is one dark exception, revealed to us by ancient sources and graffiti on the walls of Pompeii, which will send a shiver down your spine.  There were moments when the boundaries between the arena and the darkest impulses of humanity blurred.

When we talk about female prisoners, we must distinguish between the women condemned to death and the slaves who worked in the vicinity of the gladiator schools.   The real sensation that shook Roman morality to its core was not what gladiators did to prisoners, but what free and even noble women did to the gladiators.  Here, the power dynamic is reversed in a way that  was absolutely scandalous for the time.

Gladiators were considered Infarmia, meaning people without rights and without honor, who were at the very bottom of society and with whom one should not associate.  And yet they were the ultimate sex symbols of their time, whose sweat and blood were traded like magical elixirs .  Archaeologists have found vials containing the collected sweat and dirt of famous warriors .

Roman women bought this mixture called Glos for a lot of money and rubbed it into their face creams or even used it as an aphrodisiac.   Imagine a senator’s wife  sneaking into the dark corridors of the gladiator school to pay for a night with a man who was considered social scum .  The satirist Juvenal recounts with disgust the story of a noblewoman named Epia who left her husband and children to run away to  Egypt with a scarred gladiator.

That was the real scandal, because the sexual attraction of violence was stronger than any social norm.  But back to the female prisoners and what happened after the victory.  There were reports of private parties held by wealthy Romans where victorious gladiators were booked as star guests.  At these excessive banquets, which often ended in orgies, female slaves and prisoners were indeed provided, but not as trophies for the gladiator alone.

There, he was more of an exotic exhibit, a dangerous animal that was briefly led on a leash and served to entertain the guests.  The idea that a gladiator could simply take a defeated Amazon or a captured female warrior home with him is almost entirely historically inaccurate.  When women fought in the arena, which was rare but documented, they were called gladiatrix and lived under similarly harsh conditions as their male counterparts.

A victory over a woman would  not have been an honor for a Zensin male gladiator, but rather a disgrace, which is why such fights almost never took place.  But what happened to the wives of the defeated enemies, who were brought to Rome by the thousands after major campaigns ?  They often ended up in slave markets, where Lanisters bought them to work in the kitchens and workshops of gladiator schools .

Here, behind the high walls of the barracks, there was undoubtedly abuse and relationships that were often ignored or even encouraged by the guards in order to  keep the morale of the fighters stable.  It’s a brutal truth. For a gladiator who faced death every day, empathy was often a foreign concept and survival was paramount.

The women who worked in the ludus were often the only female beings these men ever saw, apart from the jeering female spectators in the stands.  These relationships were shaped by the harsh reality of slavery, in which both parties were the property of another and had no rights over their own bodies.  But let’s  delve even deeper into the psyche of these men to understand why the violence didn’t end even after the fight .

A gladiator was trained to kill and to unleash his aggression on command.  This conditioning couldn’t simply be switched off like an oil lamp.  Historians suspect that the extreme psychological stress led to violent outbursts , which primarily affected the weakest members of the gladiator school’s hierarchy. It was often precisely these female slaves who were responsible for the laundry or the food.

There are no romantic stories about gladiators and prisoners, because life in ancient Rome was a hell of work, violence, and short lifespans for the oppressed.  So when we hear that gladiators celebrated with women after their victories, this is often a euphemism for forced prostitution organized by the Lannister to keep his fighters happy .

One must bear in mind that a Lannister thought like a modern-day sports team manager , except that his players could die and had no human rights whatsoever .  He knew perfectly well that sexual frustration could impair performance in the arena .  Therefore, access to women was used rationally and coldly as a reward system .

A victory might mean a night with a woman, but that woman had no choice and was often herself a prisoner whose will had long since been broken.  Even more shocking, however, is the medical use of bodily fluids that is associated with this .  It was believed that the strength and vitality of a gladiator could be transferred to a woman if she slept with him.

This was pure superstition, but it led to women paying large sums of money to be impregnated by a victor .  People hoped for strong sons who  would inherit the father’s warlike qualities, even if the child was a bastard.  But what about the really dark rumors about necrophilia and the corpses of the women killed in the arena?  Here too, we must take a look into the depths of the Roman soul, because the dead of the arena were often simply disposed of like garbage .

There were special gates through which corpses were dragged with hooks, and what happened in the morgues of the Colosseum often remains unknown to us.  However, there are indications that executioners and sometimes gladiators had access to these places .  In a society where life was so cheap, there were hardly any taboos, as long as it didn’t happen in public and didn’t disturb the social order .

The absolute disinhibition, which we can hardly imagine today, was part of the system that was based on total dominance over the bodies of others .  Let us now look at a specific historical case that illustrates the whole perversion of this system : Kaiserkodus.  who himself enjoyed playing gladiator.  He completely blurred the lines and used his absolute power to subject women and men alike to his whims , often immediately following his staged fights.

He is the extreme example of what happened when rules no longer applied and bloody fantasy became reality. But for the average gladiator named Marcus or Verus, everyday life after the victory looked much more mundane and sad.  He was treated by doctors who were often better than those available to free citizens because he was so valuable.

His wounds were stitched, his bones were set, and then he was given a special diet of barley and beans to rebuild his layer of fat. Why a layer of grease?  It protected vital arteries and organs from superficial cuts, demonstrating how scientific and calculated everything was.  This strict routine left little room for the wild escapades with female prisoners that the myths tell us about .

The real horror lay in the system itself.  The women who were actually given to the gladiators were often those who could not find another buyer in the market.  They were inventoried as reward goods and had to  live in the small cells of the gladiators, sometimes three or four of them in a very confined space.

Can you imagine the stench, the cramped conditions, and the utter hopelessness in these damp stone chambers?  There was no privacy there, and every sound penetrated the bars to reach the neighbors.  When a gladiator returned after a victory, he was full of adrenaline, perhaps suffering from pain and mentally at his limit.  The woman in his cell was often the only person on whom he could release this immense tension , whether through sex or violence.

We must  abandon the romantic image of the rebellious Spartacus, who loves his wife and fights for freedom. Most gladiators were so deeply indoctrinated into the brutal system that they accepted the hierarchy.  They kicked downwards because they were kicked from above .  Female prisoners were at the very bottom of this chain and were the victims of a society that celebrated violence as entertainment.

Another shocking aspect is the fate of the children who resulted from these encounters in the slave quarters. These children were slaves from birth and belonged to the Lanister.  They grew up in the shadow of the arena, and often the boys themselves were trained to be gladiators .

It was a vicious cycle of blood and death that lasted for generations and from which there was almost no escape.  Have you ever wondered why we so often glorify and romanticize these stories today?  Perhaps because the naked truth is so cruel that we have to  cover it up with love stories and heroic tales in order to bear it .

But next time you watch a gladiator movie, think about the women in the background, standing in the shadows.  They were not tempting prizes that would willingly throw themselves at the winner. They were victims of a merciless system that degraded people to mere objects .  What gladiators did to them was not an act of passion, but often an act of possession and demonstration of power.

Historical reality knows no happy ending in the arena, only survivors and the dead.  In summary , the treatment of female prisoners was characterized not by wild anarchy, but by cold economic calculation.  The women served as laborers, as sexual rewards, or as victims in the games.

Their suffering was the fuel that kept the machinery running behind the scenes .  What is shocking, therefore, is not a single perverse act, but the normality of horror.  It was a world where compassion was considered a weakness, and where Rome’s strongest men were often their greatest prisoners.  When they took out their anger on those even weaker, it was simply the logical consequence of being raised to kill.

And that ‘s exactly the point that should still give us goosebumps today.  How quickly people lose their humanity when the system around them is built on cruelty.  This brings us to the end of our journey into the dark depths of Roman history , which has hopefully changed your view of antiquity forever. It is easy to be dazzled by the splendor of the armor and the cheers of the crowd , but we must never forget who paid the price for this spectacle.

History is not only what is written in the great books , but also what has been kept secret in the dark corners.  I hope you enjoyed this video and that it gave you a new perspective on the world of gladiators.  If you want to see more of these unvarnished historical analyses, then don’t forget to subscribe to the channel.
