Her Family Mocked Her Dream of Becoming a Fashion Designer… Until She Made It Big in America

PART 2:

Now, before the market closes. Sister. Sister, please can you help me hold this? You are a tailor. ‘ Yes, mama. But I am still learning. Ah, then don’t stop. It will take you places. ‘ Zakura, are you done with my dress? Yes, I just finished it. Go and try it on. Ah, Zakora, this is beautiful. Zakura, this dress is so beautiful.

It looks so good on me. It fits you well. Who made this dress? She did. It’s so beautiful. She did a very neat job. Thank you, ma. I beg. It is just one dress. Don’t start calling her a big tailor because of one dress. There’s no big deal in what she has done. Zakora, go inside and cut those vegetables for me.

Please, I’m looking for the girl who made that pink dress. Zakura, she only amends stone clothes. But I saw the dress she made. That one. She was only helping her friend. Go down the road. You will see another tailor there. That person will make it very beautiful for you. Are you sure you don’t make new dresses? She doesn’t. Mama, why are you doing this to me? You know I made that dress.

Because your place is here. You forget this nonsense and focus on the things that matter. Or better still, go and get married. Tomorrow is my wedding and this man has not even sent me my dress. What? He has not sent it. Nothing. Not even a picture. I paid him a huge amount of money 2 months ago. He told me my dress will be ready 3 days ago.

I have called him since morning. He’s not picking my calls. Maybe something happened to him. Something happened to him. Jima, something has happened to me. What am I supposed to wear tomorrow? Rapper. I am serious. I know somebody who a tailor. Please, I don’t need somebody that will sew ordinary village dress.

Listen to me first. Who is she? Her name is Zakora. Zakura? Yes. Where does she stay? Here. Here. Where? In the village. Uh-uh. No. Why? Chidima, I am getting married tomorrow. I don’t want village tailoring for my wedding dress. Who told you she makes village dresses? She lives here and I want something elegant, something beautiful, something that looks expensive. Then give her a chance.

I have seen the dress she made. That pink dress everybody has been talking about. She’s talented. Very talented. You’re sure? I am sure enough to take you to her myself. This is where she works. Just wait. Good morning, mama. Good morning. What do you want? We came to see Zakora. What do you want her for? I need a wedding dress.

Wedding dress? With that? That machine can barely survive ordinary clothes. We heard she made a beautiful dress. Who told you that? I saw it myself. Please don’t encourage this girl. Zikora cannot make wedding dresses. But I was told she could. She can amend clothes. Small sewing here and there. That is all. Mama, I have personally seen dresses she made.

You saw one dress and now you want her to make a wedding gown with this old machine. Look at it. Can this thing even sew a proper wedding gown? Come see. Come and tell them. Does your sister make wedding dresses? ‘ No. She doesn’t make wedding dresses. ‘ But I have seen her work. ‘ Maybe she has made small things, but wedding dress? No.

‘ So what am I supposed to do? Go to another tailor? No. I have seen plenty dresses she made. I am not leaving here without at least letting her at least speak for herself. She doesn’t know what she’s doing. ‘ Can you make my dress? She cannot. We didn’t ask you. Can you make it? I can try. You can? ‘ No.

You are not making any wedding dress. You will help me in the kitchen. You will help me serve my customers. That is what you should be doing. ‘ Mama, please. The girl is saying she can do it and I said she cannot. But my wedding is tomorrow. Then find another tailor. Please, we have work to do. Please wait. Please wait. What happened? I can make your dress.

Are you sure? Yes. Your mother said you cannot. I know. But I can. My wedding is tomorrow. I know. You have only tonight. Then I will work tonight. Please don’t disappoint me. I won’t. I can do this. Zikora, you made this? Yes. It is so beautiful. ‘ [gasps] ‘ Chidima, look at my dress. I told you you could trust her. It’s so beautiful.

You made this overnight with that old machine? Yes. Uh-uh. Look at this dress. Who made your dress? Zakura. Who? Zakura from the village. You mean somebody from this village made this? This finishing is beautiful. Honestly, this dress is beautiful. The finishing is neat and it looks good on you.

But who actually made this dress? Zakura. Zakura. That young lady over there. You made this dress? ‘ Yes, ma. When did you make it? She started yesterday. Yesterday? I gave her the fabric yesterday evening. And she finished this overnight? Yes. You mean she made this in one night? ‘ One night? Uhhuh. This girl is talented. I told you people would notice your good work.

You said you made this yourself. ‘ Yes, ma’am. ‘ Do you sew other styles, too? ‘ Yes, ma’am. I can. ‘ I came here only for this wedding. I’ll be returning to Ibadon in 2 days. ‘ I have some fabric with me. I want you to make something beautiful for me. ‘ For you? ‘ Yes.

Something elegant, something I can wear when I return to Ibadam. ‘ I will do my best, Ma. ‘ Don’t just do your best. Give me something that will make people ask who made it. This is beautiful. That’s why I’m trusting you with it. Can you finish it before I leave? ‘ Yes, ma’am. ‘ Good evening, mama. ‘ Madame, where are you coming from? ‘ I went to give the lady her wedding dress.

‘ So, you finally took that wedding dress to her? Yes, mama. ‘ And where did you sew it? In this house? ‘ Yes, mama. ‘ So, where is the money they paid you for the wedding dress? ‘ It’s here. Mama, give it to me. Mama, please. I want to use part of it to get a better sewing machine. This one is getting too old and it’s becoming difficult to work with.

I heard they sell fairly used sewing machines at the village market. I could get one that works better and still have some money left. ‘ Of course, everything is always about that sewing machine. You made one dress and suddenly you think this sewing business will change our lives. ‘ Mama, I’m not saying it will happen overnight.

‘ Then what are you saying? ‘ I’m saying I want to try. ‘ Try? My daughter, poverty has taught me that trying is not enough. Wait, what is that? A woman at the wedding gave it to me. ‘ Gave it to you for what? ‘ To sew a dress for her. ‘ And when are you supposed to finish it? ‘ Before she travels.

Zikora, don’t let these people deceive you. There is nothing good that can come out of this tailoring you are doing. Zikora, I don’t want you to suffer for a dream that may never feed you. ‘ But what if it does, mama? What if this is the opportunity I have been waiting for? ‘ There is nothing good that can come out of sewing clothes for people.

How will I cut this? If I make one mistake, I will spoil everything. This fabric is too expensive for me to start guessing. I have to get this right. Auntie Vine, she will know what to do. I will go and ask her tomorrow. I cannot waste this opportunity. Who gave you this? ‘ A woman at Amaka’s wedding.

‘ So now people are bringing you bringing you their clothes. ‘ She wants me to make something for her before she returns to Ibadon. ‘ Good. What is the problem? ‘ I know what I want to make, but I’m afraid I’ll cut it wrongly. ‘ Don’t rush because the fabric is expensive. Measure twice, then cut once. I did it.

Wow. Wow. It’s so beautiful. I actually made this. I really did it. You finished it. Zikora, this is beautiful. You made this yourself? ‘ Yes, ma. ‘ You’re not just a village tailor. You’re incredibly talented. ‘ Look at this. ‘ It fits you perfectly, ma. ‘ Perfectly. This is better than perfectly. Do you know what surprises me? You made this in that little village.

‘ Yes, ma. You really don’t understand what you have, do you? You are very, very talented. This is a beautiful piece of work. ‘ Thank you, ma. ‘ Take this. Ah, ma. This money is too much. This is more than 10 times what I would normally charge. ‘ Take it. You did good work. Good work deserves to be rewarded.

‘ Thank you, ma. ‘ Don’t thank me. Thank your hands. God, thank you. If I take this money home, mama will collect everything. I have to use it wisely. This old machine is making my work so difficult. It stains the clothes and sometimes it doesn’t even sew properly. I’ll buy a fairly used one.

It may not be new, but at least it will make my work easier. ‘ Good afternoon. ‘ Good afternoon, sir. ‘ How much is this one? ‘ 85,000 naira. ‘ Sir, please. I don’t have that much. That is the price. ‘ What about that one? ‘ 65,000 naira. ‘ Sir, please reduce it for me. ‘ You people always want to bargain. ‘ I’m not trying to disturb you, sir.

I really need it. ‘ You want a sewing machine? ‘ Yes, sir. ‘ For your shop. ‘ Not yet, but one day. ‘ All right. Bring 55,000 naira. ‘ Thank you, sir. Where did you get that? Mama, I asked you where you got that machine. ‘ The woman who gave me the sewing job paid me. ‘ Paid you how much? ‘ She paid me 65,000 naira.

‘ And you used the money to buy a sewing machine. ‘ Mama, look at it. It’s secondhand, but it’s still good. ‘ Take it back. ‘ What? I said take it back. ‘ Mama, why? ‘ Because your brother’s school fees are still unpaid. You know what we are going through and this is what you decided to do with the money.

‘ Mama, I bought a used one. I don’t care whether it is used or new. Your brother needs his school fees. But mama, this machine can help me make money. Money that will never come. ‘ Mama, please take it back. Please, mama, please don’t make me return it. Mama, please stand up, Zikura. ‘ I have never had a machine of my own.

Please, Mama, just give me a chance. I would have given you a chance but I cannot watch you use the little money we have to chase another dream while your brother is sitting at home because his school fees have not been paid. ‘ Mama, we are going back. You are returning it. You carried a whole 65,000 naira to buy this.

This old thing cannot solve any of the problems we have at home. What will Sewin do for you now when your brother cannot even go back to school? You should have brought that money home instead of wasting it on this machine. ‘ Ah, you people have come back. ‘ Take it. ‘ What happened? ‘ She wants to return it, mama. ‘ But she was very happy when she bought it.

‘ Happy? Do you know what we are going through? Her younger brother needs money for school. And she took the money and bought a sewing machine. What were you expecting me to do? Watch her throw away the little money we have? ‘ [snorts] ‘ Oh yeah, let’s go home. Good afternoon, ma. Welcome to Hassan Atelier. Good afternoon.

Your dress is beautiful. Thank you. Look who finally decided to visit me. Don’t start. Wait, who made this? A village to Taylor. A village tor? Yes. Who is she? Her name is Zikora. Tell me everything. I met her at a wedding. The bride to be was supposed to get her wedding dress from her tailor, but the tailor disappointed her.

He couldn’t deliver the dress, and the wedding was the next day. The poor girl was already desperate and helpless when she saw Zikora. She gave Zakora the fabric that night and begged her to help. ‘ Zakura made the dress in less than 24 hours. And honestly, Julia, you should have seen the finishing.

Less than 24 hours. ‘ Yes. And when she wore it, everybody kept asking who made her dress. I honestly thought she would struggle. But look at this. This finishing is not ordinary. That’s exactly what I told her. Who taught her? An older simress in her village. She has instinct and that is much harder to teach than sewing.

I knew you would understand. I want to meet her. You want to meet Zikura? Yes. Bring her to Ibada for what? Training. She needs exposure. She needs to learn proper fashion design. If she has this much ability with what she has available in that village, imagine what she could do with proper equipment.

She has always dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. Then perhaps someone finally needs to give that dream a chance. I’ll be going back to the village next week. Good. Please talk to her. I will. And tell her something for me. What? Talent can take you far, but training can take you even further. Bring her to me.

I want to see what she can really do. All right. I’ll talk to her when I return. I have a feeling this girl is going to surprise us. Good afternoon, ma. Good afternoon. Please, I’m here to see Zikora. Zakura. Yes, ma. Zakura, please have a seat. She made a dress for me the last time I came to the village for my cousin’s wedding.

I was so impressed that I wore the dress to see my friend in Ibado. She is a very established fashion designer. She examined the dress herself. She loved the finishing, the way the fabric was handled, everything. She was so impressed that she asked me to bring Zikora to Ibada. She wants to train her and give her proper exposure to fashion design.

She said a girl with this much ability should not remain hidden in the village. Zikora. Yes, I don’t have any child named Zikora. I’m sorry. I said I don’t have any daughter named Zakora. ‘ But this is the address they gave me. Then maybe you should check the next street. Ma, are you sure? I was given this exact address. And I have told you that there is no Zikora here.

But the young woman I’m looking for lives here. She is a tailor. Please, I don’t know what you are talking about. Ma, please don’t misunderstand me. I didn’t come here to cause any problem. I came because this is a huge opportunity for your daughter and I don’t want her to miss it. My friend saw the dress and immediately became interested in her.

There is nothing to discuss. Ma, please listen to me. I have listened. She wants Zikora to come to Ibadan for training. Training? Yes. Fashion design. Fashion design. Ah, Zikora. Good afternoon, ma. ‘ Good afternoon, my dear. ‘ You were fetching water? ‘ Yes, ma’am. ‘ I came to look for you. ‘ Me? ‘ Yes.

Is your name not Zakura? ‘ Yes, ma’am. ‘ But your mother just told me she doesn’t have a daughter named Zakura. ‘ Mama, ‘ I told her what I had to tell her. ‘ I came because of the dress you made for me. The dress? Yes, I worry to see my friend in Ibado. She is a very established fashion designer. She examined your work herself.

She loved the finishing. She loved the way you handled the fabric. Hey. And she wants to meet you. Me? Yes, you. She wants you to come to Ibadan for training. Ibadan? Yes. For training? Yes. This is a very big opportunity for me, ma. Thank you so much. I will go. No mama, you are not going anywhere. ‘ But mama, this has always been my dream.

It is what I have always wanted. And I said no. [snorts] Please mama, who will help me here? Who will help me in the kitchen? Who will help me with the book? Who will wash the clothes? Who will help me when I am busy? [snorts] ‘ Mama, I can still help you. ‘ No, [snorts] I will come back. You will not go. But this is an opportunity.

Opportunity for what? To waste your time. To chase another foolish dream. It is not foolish. Mama, please. Ma, please. I’m not trying to take your daughter away from you. ‘ Then leave her here. I am trying to give her an opportunity. She doesn’t need it. Ma, your daughter has real talent. She has responsibilities.

She also has creativity. She made my dress with limited equipment. My friend has seen the work. She believes Zikora can go far. Go far? Who will help me here? Will your friend come and help me when there is no food? Will she pay my bills? Will she run my business? Will she wash my clothes? Will she serve my customers? Will she stand here when I need someone? ‘ Mama, please.

‘ No, you are not going. ‘ [snorts] ‘ Please give me one chance. I have given you enough chances. Ma, I’m begging you to think about this carefully. This could actually help your daughter. She can learn. She can gain experience. She can come back with skills that can help her and even help this family. Please don’t close the door on her future because you are afraid of what might happen. Please leave my house.

I said leave my house. Don’t come here and deceive my daughter. ‘ I’m sorry you feel this way. This is my card. If you change your mind, call me [snorts] ‘ whenever you’re ready, my dear. Mama, you are not going anywhere. Forget this foolish dream. Find something else to do with your life. Please check the hemline of this dress.

Welcome. Let me show you our new new collection. Madam, does this color match this one? No. Bring the other shade. The other one? Not this? Yes, that’s better. Is this 100% ready? ‘ Yes, ma’am. ‘ And this one almost done, ma. Just the finishing. ‘ Has the blue one been finished? ‘ Yes, ma’am. ‘ Package it. The customer is coming.

‘ I love this one. Thank you, ma. So it is true. What is true? That somebody from Ibadan gave this girl a card. I heard they want her to come and learn fashion in Ibado. She is not going anywhere. Good. Young girls these days hear one sweet promise and suddenly they think the whole world is waiting for her.

‘ She didn’t promise me anything. Then why did she give you the card? She saw my work. ‘ Your work? You mean those clothes you sew with that old machine? Young girls these days hear one sweet promise for them. Please don’t allow this girl to deceive herself. She will go there, struggle for two weeks and come back and then everybody will laugh.

That is exactly what I have been telling her. Mama, why is everybody talking about me as if I am not here because you are not listening. I am listening. ‘ No, you are hearing only what you want to hear. What do you want me to do? Stay here. Say what people around you can afford. Help me survive. And if I want more than survival, you think I don’t want more.

You think I enjoy this life? Then why won’t you let me try? Because I know what happens when dreams meet hunger. ‘ What happened here? Ah, so this is about Ibadan. ‘ Mommy, you called the whole family for me. ‘ I told you this would happen. She has sewn a few dresses and now she thinks she’s going to Ian to become a fashion designer. ‘ Zikora, be serious.

Uncle Samto, I am serious. ‘ Serious? With what money? With whose connections? With what experience? You people should stop encouraging this girl. [snorts] I will prove them wrong. Where are you going? Ibado, ‘ I told you over my dead body. Mama, I am not asking you to understand. I am asking you to let me try and when you fail, then I will come back.

No, I will come back wiser. No, I will come back stronger. Zakora, don’t do this. Mama, bless me. When you fail, don’t say nobody warned you. ‘ Okay, mama. [snorts] Is this Ibadan ‘ Legos? Enter with change. ‘ Jesus. Madame Julia Hassan. I will find this place. Excuse me, please. Please. Do you know this address? Madame Hassan. Yes, ma. Go straight.

When you reach the big junction, ask again. ‘ Thank you, ma. ‘ Please, sir. ‘ Yes, ‘ please. I am looking for this place. ‘ You passed the junction. ‘ I passed it. ‘ Yes, you have to go back. ‘ Ah, thank you. ‘ Don’t cry. You have not even started. You came here to learn. This is it. Madame Julia Hassan.

Maybe Mama was right. There is no way a village girl like me can succeed in this big place. No. I came here already. I will enter. I will prosper. I will do great things. Good afternoon. Good afternoon. Ma, who are you looking for? Madame Julia Hassan. Madame Julia. ‘ Yes, ma. Do you have an appointment? ‘ No, ma.

Then why are you here? A woman in my village gave me this card. She told me to come here for training. ‘ Training? Training for what? [laughter] ‘ Please let me handle this. ‘ No, I’m just asking. What exactly can you sew? ‘ I am learning. [laughter] You are learning here. Where are you coming from? The village. [laughter] The village.

She came from the village for training here. Do you even know what kind of place this is? What do you know how to do? I can sew simple clothes. [laughter] Simple clothes? This place? Please. I think this is a wrong address. ‘ No, ma. This is Madame Julia Hassan’s. ‘ No, ma. This is Madame Julia Hassan’s establishment. ‘ Yes, ma. ‘ And you said somebody from your village gave you this card? Yes, ma.

Then maybe you should ask that person again. She told me to come here. Please go. Ma, please. I’m sorry. Please go. Maybe she thought this was a roadside tailoring shop. [laughter] I didn’t come this far to go back. ‘ Girl, you’re still here? ‘ Yes, sir. They told you to leave. ‘ I know. ‘ So why are you still sitting here? ‘ I am waiting ‘ for who? ‘ Madame Julia.

‘ H. I’ll eat later. First I have to enter. I may not have much, but I still have my talent. Let me keep making sketches. ‘ Who is that? ‘ I don’t know. Ma, ‘ wait. ‘ Good afternoon, Ma. Good afternoon, Ma. Please. My name is Zakura. Zakura. Yes, ma. A woman in my village gave me your card. Where did you get this? She told me to come here for training.

‘ Oh, you are the zikora from the village? ‘ Yes, ma. ‘ Why are you sitting outside? They told me to leave. They told you to leave. ‘ Yes, ma. ‘ Come, come inside. ‘ Ma? ‘ Yes. ‘ You want me to come inside? She came earlier, ma. I know. She is one of us. She is here for training. Don’t put her on the main machines yet.

Let her start with simple work. ‘ Yes, ma. ‘ Threads, arranging materials, minor alterations. Is there a problem? ‘ No, ma. ‘ Good. She is new. ‘ Yes, ma’am. Let her observe. She needs to learn how we work here. ‘ Yes, ma. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. ‘ Yes, ma’am. ‘ You must be tired from your journey.

‘ Yes, ma’am. ‘ Go and rest. Someone will show you where you will stay. Tomorrow we will talk properly. Thank you, ma. ‘ Welcome. Thank you. This is where you will stay here. Yes. You can keep your things here. Thank you. Tomorrow morning, be ready early. Yes, ma. First day and already taking the best empty bunk. Let her enjoy it.

Tomorrow she will know this place is not a village sewing shop. With that bag, I thought she was only passing through. [laughter] I made it. Tomorrow I will start. Zikora has reached Ibadon by now. I know that girl. Once she makes up her mind, nothing can stop her. I told her this morning. I told her not to go.

But did she listen? She carried her bag and went. My stubborn child. But what will she meet there? She doesn’t know anybody in that place. She doesn’t even have a phone. How will I know if she’s okay? I cannot even call her if something happens. How will I know? And all because of this tailoring. Tailoring. Tailoring.

This is the same dream I had. I also thought tailoring would change my life. I thought one day I would have my own place. Look at me now. Look at where that dream brought me. Poverty. Struggling every day just to eat. Serving customers just to survive. And now my daughter has picked up the same dream. What does she know? She thinks Ian will be different.

She thinks because she can sew everything will suddenly become easy. Let her go and see. God, I don’t want her to suffer. I don’t want her to end up like me. That is what she doesn’t understand. I am not against her because I hate her. I just know what that dream can cost. She would think I am wicked. She would think her mother doesn’t believe in her.

But what kind of mother wants to watch her daughter suffer? Zikora. But what will she meet there? She doesn’t know anybody in that place. She doesn’t even have a phone. You should have listened to me. Please God, let her be safe. Let that stubborn girl be safe. Today is my first day. I don’t know what is waiting for me there, but I will learn.

I may not know everything yet, but I will learn. I will work hard. I will listen. I will ask questions when I don’t understand. I will not allow anyone or their words to get to me. I didn’t come this far to turn back now. One day, I will become the woman I have always dreamed of becoming. ‘ You’re the new girl.

‘ Yes, ma. from the village. ‘ Yes, ma. ‘ Then you have plenty to learn. ‘ I know. Ma ‘ Zikora. ‘ Yes, Madame Julia. ‘ Come. These are the fabrics. Yes, ma’am. These are the notions. Yes, ma’am. Buttons here, zippers there, threads on that shelf, and those machines. ‘ Yes, ma. Don’t touch them. ‘ Okay, ma.

Not because I think you’re incapable, because I want you to understand what you’re doing before you start doing it. ‘ I understand, ma. ‘ For now, you arrange, you observe, you assist, you learn. ‘ Yes, ma. ‘ And if you don’t understand something, I’ll ask. ‘ Good. Ma, should these ones go here? ‘ No, those are silk threads. ‘ Oh, I thought they were the same.

‘ Don’t worry, you will learn with time. Why are these zippers separated? Because they are different sizes. ‘ Oh, you asked too many questions. ‘ Sorry, ma. ‘ Don’t apologize. Just listen. I told you nobody would take this girl for training. Look at her. What does she even know about tailoring? Exactly.

And you think somebody like this can afford proper training? Maybe she thinks watching other people sew is enough to become a tailor. Wait, I thought you said you came here for training. So why are you sitting on the floor doing the work of an errand girl? Maybe this is the only work they can trust her with.

Of course, you don’t give someone who knows nothing a sewing machine. Imagine coming all the way here to learn fashion only to spend your money carrying fabrics and arranging baskets. Tell me what exactly did you come here to learn? Everything I can learn. [laughter] Everything? You haven’t even learned how to sort fabrics properly. I am learning.

Learning. Then learn quickly. Nobody here has time to carry you. [laughter] I will learn. You’re still here? Everyone has left. ‘ Yes, ma. I’m almost done. You’re trying too hard. I just want to learn. ‘ You’ll get tired. Maybe, but I won’t stop. Zakura. Yes, ma. What are you looking at? The sleeve.

Why? The fabric is pulling. Where? Here, ma. Wow, how did you notice this? I’ve ‘ been watching. ‘ I know you have. That’s so thoughtful of you. Kindly follow me to my office. I want you to understand something. I didn’t bring you here because I felt sorry for you. I saw what you did for my friend and I liked it.

People pay a lot of money to learn, but you’re here. So don’t waste the opportunity. ‘ I won’t. Ma, ‘ don’t compare yourself with anybody here. Don’t be distracted by people who don’t like you. Watch, learn, ask questions, and when you make mistakes, correct them. Yes, Ma. I see something in you. Now go and prove me right.

Thank you so much, Ma. I don’t take this opportunity for granted. You saw something in me when nobody else did. I promise I’ll learn. I’ll work hard. And I’ll prove that you were right to believe in me. Excuse me, ma. What? I think the pattern may fit better if you turn it this way. What did you say? I just thought um You thought When did you become a cutting expert? I’m sorry.

You just came here. Now you’re telling me how to do my work? ‘ No, ma. I wasn’t trying to. ‘ Then don’t. Village girl, don’t mind her. I wasn’t trying to disrespect her. I know. I only saw something. Then next time, wait until you’re asked. ‘ Okay, ma. But you were right. ‘ Zakura, carry the garment bag.

We’re going for a customer fitting. ‘ Yes, ma. The waist feels loose. Let me see. Yes, it needs to come in slightly. I also feel like the bust is not sitting properly. Turn slightly for me. Okay, I see what you mean. I want it fitted, but I don’t want too tight. Of course, we’ll take it in without making you uncomfortable.

What about the back? Does it look fine? The back is good. The waist is the only part I would adjust. What about the corset? Does it feel too tight? No, the corset is sitting well. I wouldn’t loosen it. I really love the dress. I just want the waist to sit properly, and it will.

We’ll make that adjustment and bring it back for another fitting. Good. I want everything perfect before the event. It will be ready, ma’am. I trust you. What did you notice with the client dress fittings? The waist was too tight. Like she said, ma. Anything else? I think the beading didn’t tack well at the waistline.

Why? It was sitting too low. Good. No, too much. Better [sighs] again. Don’t rush, Zikora. Measure properly. You can do this. Sort and measure several fabric pieces according to the measurements marked on the sketch. Then label and arrange them in the correct order for cutting. Ma, what happened? What are you going to do? Start again. ‘ Good.

You can start using the machines from tomorrow. me? ‘ Yes, you. Thank you, ma. ‘ Don’t thank me yet. Let’s see what your hands can do. Are you ready, Ma? I’ve never used this machine before. I don’t know how to use it. Relax. You’re too tense. I’m scared I’ll spoil it. Then spoil it. That’s how you learn. Slowly. Yes, ma. Don’t fight the machine.

Okay, Madame Julia spend too much time with that girl. Let her enjoy it. She won’t remain special forever. Since when did Madame Julia start teaching someone like her personally? That is what I don’t understand. She barely notices the rest of us these days. And look at her. Madame Julia is practically holding her hand through everything.

Maybe she thinks the girl has something the rest of us don’t have. Something? Yes, special attention. She has been here for only a short time and already Madame Julia is giving her opportunities we had to wait for. Let’s see how long that lasts. She still has a lot to prove. She will make a mistake eventually.

And when she does, Madame Julia will finally see what we see. Just watch. I’m watching. Take this fabric and recreate this design. Don’t rush. Don’t disappoint me. And whatever you do, don’t copy anybody. I want to see what your hands can really do. ‘ I understand, ma. I’ll do my best. Don’t just do your best. Take your time.

Pay attention to every detail and make it yours. ‘ Yes, ma. ‘ Good. Let me see what you can create. Measure again. Cut. No. Something is wrong. Okay, we are getting there. Now, this part has to be right. Finished. You made this? Yes, ma. From the fabric I gave you. Yes, ma. You didn’t just recreate the design.

You changed it. I thought it would look better this way. And you were right. Do you know what you just did? I gave you a design to follow. You gave me something of your own. This is impressive. So now you’re wearing our uniform. Madame Julia gave it to me. I know. Then why did you ask? Welcome to Hassan Atelier.

How can we be of help to you? I need a dress for a dinner party. Of course, please. Let’s have a look at our showroom. Wait. Who made this? Zakura. Can I meet her? I love the finishing. Thank you, ma. Can she make mine? Yes, she can. ‘ Israel, you’re here. ‘ Yes, I came to photograph the new collection. ‘ Everything is ready.

You can start whenever you’re ready. ‘ Perfect. Who made this? ‘ I did. ‘ You did? ‘ Yes. ‘ Don’t move. ‘ Why? ‘ Because this needs to be seen. ‘ Seen where? ‘ Everywhere. Madame Julia, ‘ do you have a minute? Something interesting happened after I photographed the new collection. ‘ Of course. What happened? ‘ I posted some of the photographs from the showroom a short while ago.

I expected people to like the collection, but one particular gown is getting far more attention than the others. ‘ The deep smoky teal gown near the back of the showroom. ‘ That one. I remember seeing it. What are people saying about it? ‘ They keep asking the same question. They want to know who designed it.

‘ And what did you tell them? I told them I would find out exactly who made it before I said anything. ‘ Good. We don’t attach the name of the fashion house to something until we’re certain of the details. ‘ That’s why I came straight to you. But Madame Julia, I think you should see the comments yourself.

‘ Zakura is just so incredible. Knew that gown was special when I first saw it. I just didn’t expect people to notice it this quickly. ‘ More than I expected. People are asking where they can get it. Some are even asking whether the designer takes private orders. ‘ Zakura has talent. I’ve always known that, but talent inside this building is one thing.

Having people outside asking for your work is something else. ‘ That is exactly what surprised me, Madame Julia. The other gowns are getting attention, too. But people keep coming back to that particular one. What exactly are they saying? ‘ They want to know whether the designer is taking orders. Some are asking where they can get something similar, and others are asking to see.

‘ That means they’re not only interested in the gown, they’re interested in the person behind it. ‘ That’s what I was thinking. Then we need to see what else she can do. ‘ I can photograph more of her work. ‘ Do that. And don’t just photograph the gowns. I want the work documented properly. ‘ Understood. ‘ If people are already asking for her work, we shouldn’t make them wait too long.

‘ All right, ma. I will do just that. ‘ Has anybody seen my book? What book? My sketches. Why would we touch your sketches? I think someone took it. I kept it here. This is not where I kept my sketchbook. Someone hid it here. Thank God. I found it. At least I should be more careful with my sketchbook. Wait, is that Zikora? Zikora who? Nyoma’s daughter.

That cannot be her. Look properly. Nyama, have you seen your daughter’s picture? My daughter? Yes. Where did you get this? Online. Zakura. Is that really you? ‘ Zikora? Yes. The same Zikora? How many Zikoras do you know? Hm. ‘ Ma Zora, how have you been? ‘ Ma, I’ve been wanting to see you. I tried to reach you, but there was no way.

Thank you so much, Ma, for giving me Madame Julia’s card. My life has never remained the same since you met me in the village. Thank you for that opportunity. Thank you for helping a village girl like me. I don’t take it for granted. I’ve been learning, Ma. I’m growing. I’m training hard and I’m getting better every day. ‘ I can see that.

I see you everywhere online. I see the dresses you make and Julia tells me how good you’ve become. You’ve done very well, Zikora. Keep up the good work. The sky is your starting point. Thank you so much, Ma. Everyone, please listen for a moment. I have an important announcement to make. The annual Hassan Atelia runway show is coming up and this year bigger than what we’ve done before.

The runway show will bring together some of our most important clients, fashion executives, industry guests, and members of the press. It is one of the biggest opportunities we have each year to showcase what this atelier is capable of.  And this year, I don’t want only the senior designers to participate. I want every designer and trainee who has been working hard here to have the opportunity to submit a design.

Ma, does that mean even those of us who are still learning can submit our own designs? Yes, if you have the skill, the creativity and the confidence to present your work, I want to see it. I am not interested in how long you have been here. I want to see what you can create. But understand this clearly. This is not just about making a beautiful dress.

Your design has to show your creativity, your understanding of construction, your attention to detail, and your ability to create something that belongs on a professional runway. So, start thinking now. Don’t wait until the last minute. I want you to challenge yourselves, experiment, and create something that tells us exactly who you are as designers.

You will each have to submit one original design for consideration. The pieces will be reviewed before the final selection is made, and only the strongest designs will be chosen for the runway. The submission deadline is in two weeks. That gives you enough time to plan, sketch, create your design, and make sure every detail is properly finished.

This is your chance to show what you can do. Take it seriously because you never know who might be watching. ‘ How many pieces of dress are you making? ‘ Seven. ‘ Seven for the runway. ‘ Maybe eight. ‘ You’re planning eight looks in two weeks. ‘ I have to. I don’t want them to see just dresses. I want them to see where I came from. ‘ Then every piece needs to say something.

‘ They will. ‘ Good. Then stop thinking like someone who is trying to impress them. ‘ Israel, what should I think like? ‘ Someone who already belongs there. ‘ Wait, this finishing is not right. This seam will ruin the whole drape. Where is the last look? ‘ It’s almost ready. ‘ Almost? ‘ I just need to finish the back.

‘ Then something is wrong. ‘ What? ‘ You’ve spent weeks making this collection, but this one doesn’t feel like the others. ‘ It’s supposed to be different. ‘ Different is fine, but this looks like you stopped halfway. ‘ Wait, ‘ what are you doing? ‘ I know what’s missing. Zakora, the showcase is tomorrow.

‘ I know ‘ you’re really changing it now. ‘ It was never finished.  ‘ Ready on set, please.  [cheering] My hands are shaking. Good. Good. It means you care. [sighs] Now breathe, ma. What if they don’t like it? Then they don’t like it. But they will see it. But they will see what ma ‘ what you saw when you created every single piece.

You didn’t come here to make make everybody comfortable. ‘ First model in position. ‘ That’s your collection. Okay. Let them see what you see.  Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to tonight’s showcase.  ‘ She looks beautiful. She looks like your sketch. That’s exactly how I imagined it, Ma. Wow,  that’s two. Seven left. Stop counting.

Just watch.  An exploration of structure, movement, and modern African elegance.  ‘ ‘ An exploration of structure, movement, and modern African elegance. Oh my god. Breathe. I am breathing. Ma, I am breathing. Ma, [laughter] turn. Hold it. ‘ ‘ Your turn. Now.

Now. I don’t know if I’m ready. You’ve been ready. What if I mess up? Then keep walking. That’s the runway. ‘ And now, the final look of the evening, created by the designer behind tonight’s collection. ‘   ‘ I actually did it. [cheering]  ‘ ‘ Zakora, look here [laughter] again.

Give me that smile. One more. [laughter] ‘ That’s you. ‘ I still can’t believe tonight happened. ‘ You should. You worked for it. ‘ You’ve taken enough pictures. ‘ Not even close. This one is good. ‘ Let me see. That’s really me. What are you doing? ‘ Choosing the best ones ‘ for what? ‘ These are going online ‘ tonight.

‘ Tonight. ‘ People are going to see them. ‘ People are going to see your work. One last picture. ‘ Israel. ‘ Perfect. We’re almost done for tonight. Give me five more minutes. You said that 20 minutes ago, and I meant it every time. Whoa. What? You should see this. Wait, run that back. Which part? All of it.

Stop there. Look at that construction. The silhouette. Exactly. Play it again. You really like it. I want to know who made it. I’ll find out. Where did this come from? I’m checking. I found the designer. Who? Her name is Zakura. Zakura. Zakura. That’s the designer. Yes. Interesting. Is she based here? No.

Los Angeles? No. Chicago? No. She’s from Nigeria. ‘ Nigeria? Yes. She did all of this there? Looks like it. That’s impressive. Zakura, come to my office immediately. Ma, you called me. Close the door. What happened? Ma, look at this. Is this real? Very real. What are they saying? Ma, I don’t understand. They want you in New York.

New York? They saw your collection ‘ and they want to see what else you can do. ‘ Ma, you’re going to America. Zakora. ‘ Me? ‘ Yes, you. You earned this. ‘ Ma, it still feels like a dream. ‘ Then enjoy it. You have worked for this. ‘ I just hope I don’t disappoint you. ‘ You cannot disappoint me. Just do your best. ‘ I will make sure I do my best.

‘ I know you will. But don’t come back the same girl who left here. ‘ What do you mean, Ma? ‘ Come back knowing exactly what you’re capable of. ‘ I will, Ma. ‘ Now go show them what you’ve been working so hard to become. Thank you for believing in me. ‘ You made it very easy to believe in you. Then remember how many times you thought that before. And look where you are now.

‘ I’m going to miss you, Ma. I know you have to take care of yourself. Okay, ‘ I will. I’m just going to miss you. ‘ I’ll miss you, too. We will talk every day. ‘ Ah, so this is America. Are you Zikora? ‘ Yes. Good afternoon. Welcome. I’m glad you made it safely. ‘ Thank you very much. ‘ We have transportation waiting outside.

‘ Okay. Thank you. First time here? ‘ Yes, first time. You’re going to see a lot in the next few days. I hope I can handle it. Nervous? Yes, I am just a little bit. That’s normal. I just don’t want to disappoint them. They invited you because they already saw something special in your work. ‘ God, look at where you have brought me.

I must represent myself well. Wow, I’m so impressed. Welcome to your first day at the New York Fashion Studio. Welcome. We’re very happy you’re here. Thank you very much. I’m happy to be here. We’ve been following your work. ‘ Really? Yes. Yes. Your construction is beautiful. Thank you. I really appreciate that.

This is our lead seamstress. She’ll be working with you. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you, too. I’ve heard a lot about your construction work. I hope the things you heard are good ones. They are. Which one would you choose? This one. Why? The weight is better. It will hold the shape. That was my first choice too. Then we are thinking the same way.

The shoulder isn’t sitting correctly. Yes, the balance is slightly off. What would you change? I would adjust this part and reduce the tension here. Go ahead. She’s ready. Yes. You’ve been staring at that dress for 5 minutes. I’m just making sure everything is right. ‘ Everything is right. You’re about to watch a model walk an international runway wearing something you created.

I still cannot believe it. I used to dream about this and now you’re standing here. I wish my mother could see me now. She’d be proud. I’m ready. Then let’s do this. ‘ ‘ I can’t believe this. You should. I wish my mother could see this. [sighs] A rising Nigerian designer is attracting international attention after her debut collection received an enthusiastic response from the fashion industry.

Her designs combine precise garment construction with a distinctive approach to structure and fit. Is this really me? ‘ You’re on every fashion segment this morning. [gasps] ‘ Please don’t tell me that. Why? Because I don’t even know where to put my face. [laughter] See our girl. She has really done it. Her international collaboration is expected to expand her work into new markets.

I knew she would get here. Madam, ‘ you were crying every day when she left. Who told you to expose me? [laughter] ‘ International attention continues to grow around the young Nigerian designer. ‘ Sister, you should be proud. ‘ I am. I am very proud of my daughter. ‘ Zakura, please come inside. We’d like you to stay.

Stay. We want to develop a long-term collaboration with you. ‘ I don’t even know what to say. You can start with Yes. ‘ Yes. You’ll have your own design projects, your own creative input, and opportunities to develop your collection internationally. Look at you. ‘ Madame Julia, ‘ you came back. ‘ I told you I would.

‘ And you came back as yourself. ‘ They signed me. They signed you. ‘ Yes. ‘ I told you. You told me when nobody else believed me.  ‘ And now you have to remember something. ‘ What? You didn’t become successful because America saved you. You became successful because you carried your talent there.

‘ Madam, yes. I want to go home to your mother. Yes, ma. Then go ‘ Zakura. ‘ My daughter. ‘ Mommy, I am sorry. Mommy, [snorts] please. No, let me say it. You thought I hated your dream. I didn’t. I was afraid of it. Why, mama? I also wanted to become a fashion designer. You? Yes, me. I loved sewing. I wanted to open my own shop.

‘ Don’t worry, I will deliver it. Are you sure? Rest. You need it. [laughter and gasps] ‘ After your father died, everything became difficult. We had debts. We had no money. I was pregnant with you. Every time I looked at that sewing machine, I remembered him. So, when you told me you wanted to become a tailor, I wasn’t seeing your dream. I was seeing my fear.

Mommy, you should have told me. I was ashamed. You don’t have to be ashamed. You were trying to protect me. I thought if you chose another path, you would have an easier life. But this was the path I was meant to walk. Can you forgive me? I forgave you long ago. You were my mother before you were anything else.

‘ Zikora, ‘ Auntie Vine, ‘ you went to America and came back looking like a big woman. ‘ Auntie, I’m still your student. Auntie, I want to do something. ‘ What? ‘ I want to support this place. ‘ Support how? ‘ New machines, ‘ better materials, and training for girls who cannot afford to learn. ‘ You won’t build this place.

‘ I want another girl to have the chance you gave me. Your father would have been proud of you. ‘ I wish he was here. ‘ He is part of you. ‘ Are you ready to come back? Yes, I am. We have a lot of work waiting for you. I know, Sarah. And this time, I know exactly where I’m going. Welcome to Zakora, where we define global fashion.

I feel we should use this unique fabric. ‘ I think this curve works. Yes, ‘ you are doing a really wonderful job. This is absolutely perfect. ‘ Sometimes the dream that people tell you to abandon is the very thing that would change your life. Don’t be afraid to become who you were created to be.
