A major development has emerged in the case involving the 16 children rescued from a home in Hamden, Ohio. A Vinton County grand jury has now issued updated indictments against all four members of the Siders family for alleged child endangerment. Gary Siders Jr., Elizabeth Siders, and Christina Siders each face 19 counts, while Gary Siders Sr. remains charged with 16 counts. The new indictments come nearly two months after authorities removed the children from the home, and they reveal important details about how investigators first discovered the family.
According to officials, the discovery of the 16 children was not the result of a routine welfare check. Instead, authorities were initially investigating a separate case involving Gary Siders Jr. and his alleged connection to a minor who was not part of his immediate family. Both Gary Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth Siders, have now been indicted in that separate investigation. Each faces two counts of sexual battery and two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Authorities have emphasized that the alleged victim in that case is not an immediate family member.
The investigation reportedly began months earlier. In December 2025, the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Special Victims Unit after allegations of sexual abuse involving two children were reported. That investigation eventually led authorities to two other men, Josh Saunders and Brandon Henderson. Saunders was indicted on three counts of rape and one count of gross sexual imposition, while Henderson faces 21 charges, including sexual battery, gross sexual imposition, and child endangerment.
Information obtained during that initial investigation then prompted investigators to open another case in March 2026. As part of that investigation, law enforcement sought Gary Siders Jr.’s DNA for genetic testing. Search warrants were obtained, and officers eventually located Siders Jr. When they went to the family’s residence on Omer Street to carry out the warrants, however, investigators encountered something far more disturbing.
Inside the home, authorities discovered 16 children living in what officials described as unsafe and severely neglected conditions. The children ranged in age from approximately 18 months to 18 years. Their discovery transformed what had begun as an investigation involving Gary Siders Jr. into a much larger child-endangerment case involving the entire Siders household.
The latest indictments allege that Gary and Elizabeth Siders, along with Gary’s parents, failed in their duties of care and created substantial risks to the health and safety of children in their custody. The charges cover different periods and include multiple legal theories concerning the alleged endangerment.
Importantly, officials have not said that the sexual-abuse allegations against Gary and Elizabeth involve any of the 16 children found inside the home. The Ohio Attorney General’s Office has specifically stated that the alleged victim in the separate case is not a member of their immediate family. Therefore, the available official information does not establish that the 16 rescued children were sexually abused by the couple.
The new developments nevertheless provide a clearer picture of how the shocking discovery unfolded. Investigators were initially pursuing allegations involving children outside the Siders household. Their efforts to obtain Gary Siders Jr.’s DNA eventually brought them to the Omer Street residence, where they unexpectedly discovered the 16 children and the conditions in which they had allegedly been living.
The investigation remains ongoing, and prosecutors have stressed that the indictments are allegations. All of the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in court.
