Christian Evans, 20, Briana’s boyfriend, and Dejamius Payne, 21, Evans’ roommate, were later arrested after authorities said they had traveled as far as West Virginia before returning to Ohio.
At first, Briana reportedly told investigators that she knew little about what had happened and denied knowing who else had been inside the house. She later acknowledged that Evans and Payne had been there but continued to deny participating in the attack. Investigators, however, recovered deleted text messages from her phone during a forensic examination. Prosecutors say those messages may provide evidence that the attack had been discussed and planned beforehand.
The messages allegedly exchanged between Briana and Evans are at the center of the prosecution’s case. According to the criminal complaint, the conversations included discussions about hiding their involvement, obtaining a gun, wearing gloves, avoiding forensic evidence, and determining how close they were to carrying out the plan. Some messages allegedly discussed what could happen to the bodies afterward. The messages had reportedly been deleted from Briana’s phone, but investigators were able to recover them.
The alleged motive remains one of the most disturbing and difficult questions in the case. Police say Briana had argued with her mother hours before the shooting. The disagreement was reportedly over household chores and cleaning. Briana then allegedly complained about the argument to Evans, who responded with a statement suggesting that he would have killed her mother if he were in Briana’s position. Investigators also say Briana described her relationship with Evans as something her parents did not approve of and allegedly claimed that her parents were “very racist.”
What makes the allegations especially shocking is Briana’s life before the shooting. She reportedly had no criminal record and had recently graduated from high school. She was a competitive track athlete and was reportedly planning to continue running at Ohio Wesleyan University. Her attorney emphasized her lack of criminal history, her ties to the community, and her future educational plans when arguing for a lower bond.
There is also a deeply ironic detail surrounding Tamila Dutcher. According to the report, she had worked as a psychologist and had written a paper in 2002 examining adolescent violence and homicide. The paper discussed the problem of young people committing violent acts and the different factors associated with adolescent murder. More than two decades later, her own family would become the center of an alleged case involving teenage violence and the death of a parent.
Briana’s attorney has stressed that the allegations are serious but that she remains legally presumed innocent. The court ultimately set her bond at $3 million in cash or real estate. If released, she would face strict conditions, including house arrest, GPS monitoring, restrictions on leaving Ohio, and a prohibition on contacting her co-defendants. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for August 24.
The prosecution’s case could become even more serious because investigators are also examining the alleged shooting at Neil King. If prosecutors determine that the evidence supports it, an attempted murder charge could potentially be added. Legal analysts interviewed in the report explained that under Ohio’s complicity law, determining exactly which defendant pulled the trigger may not necessarily prevent prosecutors from holding the others responsible if they participated in the alleged plan.
