Her Family Forced Her to Marry a Blind Man, Unaware He Was the Real Billionaire Heir

PART 2:

A blind husband in the slum. What will people say? ” People will say you finally married off the burden. Pour the wine,  Ifeanyi. Tonight this house belongs to my daughters. ” That night Ebele swept the one-room home and did not cry where her blind husband could hear her. ” You are not crying, Ebele. But the broom has stopped moving.

Sit. You do not have to earn your place tonight. ” You hear too much for a blind man. I am only  tired. My family gave me away like an old chair. It is nothing. ”  ” An old chair holds a tired man when the fine ones are too proud to. ”  ” You are not nothing, Ebele. Sit with me. ” And so a discarded girl and a dispossessed heir sat in the dark as equals,  each about to rescue the other.

” Tell me one thing, Somadina. Were you always blind? Your hands move like a man who once had everything  to lose. ” Three years ago I could see, Ebele. Then a car, a fire, ”  ” and a family that decided a blind man cannot own anything. ” So, we are both thrown away by our own blood.

Then we will be each other’s family now. That is enough for me. ” She did not know her husband still owned the empire that discarded him, sealed in a will his uncle had never cracked. And Somadina  did not know that this quiet girl would give him the one thing his fortune never could, a reason to fight.

” You described the sunrise to me this morning, Ebele. ”  ” Orange over the rooftops. Nobody has painted the sky for me in 3 years. ” Then I will paint  it every morning. You lost your eyes, not your right to the world. I will lend you mine. ” Each dawn she became his eyes. ”  ” And each dawn a little more of the broken man behind the dark glasses came back to life.

” Madam Ebele, the market is far. Let me carry the yams. ” A new wife should not sweat like a laborer on her first week. I have sweated  my whole life, Panduka. What is new is that someone finally noticed. Walk with me. Tell me about him. ” He  was gentle once before the fire. Then the people who called him son locked him out and called him useless.

He stopped speaking. ”  ” And now? ” Now he counts your footsteps in the dark and smiles. ” You woke something,  child. ” Do not let go of it. ” He needs it more than air. ” She did not ask what empire,  what fire, what family. She only walked and listened and stored every word like a woman saving coins.

” Ebele. Look at you, hawking yams like a common trader, ”  ” and still married to the blind rat. ” Has he beaten you back to your senses yet? ” [laughter] ” He has never raised a hand or a voice, Ozioma. Which is more than this family ever managed.  ” How is the fine house treating you? ” Better than a gutter.

” Mother says when the blind one passes away, you can crawl home and scrub floors.  We might even feed you. ” Keep the floors, sister. I am building something you cannot see with your two good eyes. Go home. ” Your yams are cheaper than your heart. ” [sighs] ” The market laughed, but at the sister,  not the maid.

And for the first time, a discarded girl walked away with her head unbowed. ” You fought Ozioma today. ” Mhm. ” I heard it in your steps when you came in. Lighter, like a woman who won something. ” I did not fight. ”  ” I just stopped kneeling. You taught me that, Somadina, without saying a word. A blind man  showed me how to stand.

” That night he reached for the ebony cane and turned the silver head over in his hands ”  ” as if weighing a decision heavier than gold. ” You are thinking of fighting back, Soma.  I know that grip. ” The last time you held the cane like that, your father had just passed  away. ” My uncle has 30 days, Panduka.

30 days  to bury me on paper. For 3 years  I let him because I had nothing to live for. Now I have a woman who paints me sunrises.  Suddenly the empire he stole feels worth taking back. Suddenly I am angry again. ” Anger is good, my son. But your uncle  owns the board, the banks, the lawyers.

All you own is a cane  and a will he cannot find. ” Then we find a will and we find one honest man on that board quietly. If Maduka smells me coming, he will move faster.  ” Across the city, Maduka was already moving ”  ” and the loose thread he meant to pull was a 2 million naira debt and a greedy stepmother.

” Madam Ronke, is it? Your stepdaughter married my nephew. I am prepared to be very generous to a family  that helps me. Sit. ” Generous how, Chief? That girl is nothing to me. If there is money in her marriage,  I want my share. I raised the ungrateful  thing. ” Then we understand  each other.

When the time comes, you will swear your daughter never truly consented. You will annul it. You will annul  it. ” Annul it? Chief, if the blind boy has  money, I would rather she stay married and I collect. Why would  I break a golden marriage? ” Because the gold is mine, madam,  and I do not share.

Break the marriage or I will remember you stood between me and my company. ” And so the greedy found the greedier ”  ” and a poor girl’s marriage became a chip on a rich man’s table with 30 days on the clock. ” Ibele. Whatever you hear about me in the coming days, whatever  they say I am or I’m not, promise you will wait for the truth.

” I married a blind beggar in  front of a laughing town, Sumadina. I am not the running kind. Tell me the truth  now, and I will keep it. ” Soon. Not because I do not trust you. Because the moment you know, they can hurt you to reach me. ” Let me build the wall first. She did not push. She had learned that some men, like some locks, open only when they are ready, and never 1 second before.

”  ” But she held his hand in the dark and felt, under the beggar’s cracked skin, the pulse of a man who had once ruled something vast. ” There is a letter for you, Sumadina.  Thick paper, a gold seal. Nobody sends a beggar gold seals. Shall I read it? Or shall I wait? ” Read it. ”  ” You are my eyes now.

And a woman who reads a man’s secret letter and stays is worth more than the secret. ” Mhm. It is from a director,  Ekweume. He says the shares are still yours,  the will is real, and he will stand with you if you come. Sumadina, what  shares? ” Sit, Ibele. It is time. The blind beggar you married owns the majority of the Okwesa Group, 51%  willed by my father.

” 51 of what? ” Of everything my uncle is spending. ”  ” The towers, the banks, the cars. He runs it, but the law says I own it. He just made sure I could not prove it. ” She sat very  still holding a gold seal in a hand that had scrubbed floors that morning and did not once ask what her share would be.

” Do you want to run now, Ebele? Now that you know I am not a poor blind man, but a haunted one. Maduka kills to keep what he stole. ” I did not stay for a poor man, I stayed for  Maduka. And I will not run from a rich man. I stayed  for the man who painted no lie about who he was. ” And in that one sentence, three years of distrust fell  off a blind man like a coat too heavy for a warmer season.

” Mr. ”  ” Ukusa, forgive an old friend of your father for coming to a slum. ” But your uncle  has called the vote for the 30th day. ” Then we have 26 days, director. Tell me who on that board still remembers my father and who has already been bought. ” Four will stand for your father. Five vote  with Maduka.

But two of those five are not bought, only afraid. ” To win the vote,  you need the will in your hand and a doctor who will swear you are sane. ” The will is in my father’s lawyer’s vault, sealed. Maduka has watched that vault for 3 years. ” If I send a  man, he vanishes by morning. ” Then send a woman.

Nobody watches the blind beggar’s village wife.  I carried you over a threshold. I can carry one sealed envelope. ” The two men fell silent because the plan  was perfect and terrible. And it turned a scrubbing girl into the only key that fit. ” No. If Maduka learns you carried it, he will not send lawyers, Ebele.

He will send worse. ” I will not spend you to buy back a company. ” You are not  spending me. You are trusting me. There is a difference.  And a blind man of all people should be able to feel it. ” She is right, Mr. Okwosa. And she is invisible,  which in this fight is the same as being armored.

Let your wife  be your eyes one more time. ” So, it was agreed quietly, ”  ” in a room the rich would never enter, that a discarded girl would walk into a lion’s vault and walk out with a crown. ” Madam Ronke, my patience  is thinning. The vote is in 26 days. I need that marriage broken before then.

Where is my annulment? ” The girl will not come home, Chief. She is stubborn and worse, she  looks happy. Happy women do not sign annulments. ” Then stop asking and start squeezing. You still owe 2 million to a lender who happens to work for me now. Push her or drown. ” You bought my  debt? ” Mhm.

” Chief, that is That is not generous. That is a leash. ” What do you want me to actually do to  my own daughter? ” Stepdaughter. Tell her the blind man is a fraud, a woman beater, a debtor. Frighten her home or I frighten you into the street and the stepmother who sold a girl for 2 million discovered the oldest law of the greedy.

The one who pays  you can also own you. ” Somadina, my stepmother came to the market today. She smiled. She has not smiled at me since my mother passed away. Something is wrong. ”  ” Matuk, let them use her. It has begun, Ebele. They will use your  family strong. Whatever they offer, whatever they threaten, tell me  first.

” I will, but hear me. They can threaten a girl who wants their approval.  I stopped wanting it the day a blind man called me treasure. ” He smiled and reached for her face and read it the only way he could, ”  ” with careful fingers that had learned to see in the dark. ” 26 days, Ebele. In 26  days, I take back my name or my uncle buries it with me.

Are you truly  ready for that war? ” I have  been at war my whole life, Somadina. The only difference  now is that, for the first time, I am not fighting it alone. Yes, I am ready.  ” And somewhere in the dark, two people the world had thrown away began quietly to plan  the day the world would have to look again.

” You are the wife of Somadina Ukosha? You do not look like a billionaire’s wife. You look like someone’s housemaid. ” That is exactly why they sent me, sir. A housemaid can walk past guards who would shoot a lawyer. My husband  said you kept his father’s last words. ” I have  kept them 3 years at the cost of my sleep.

Chief Maduka has offered me money and threats  for this envelope. What do you offer? What do you offer? ” Nothing  but the truth, sir. A blind man who trusts you, a dead man who chose you, and a wife  who will not leave without it. Is that not enough? ” The one messenger a watching uncle  would never think to watch.

He was describing you, child. 3 years before you came.  He pressed the sealed will into her hands,  and Ebele hid a fortune inside a basket of ugu leaves under tomatoes, the way the poor hide everything. ”  ” You, market woman, stop. Chief Maduka’s orders, we search every bag leaving this building. Open it. Slowly.

What are you hiding under the leaves? ” Tomatoes, oga, and my afternoon. Search it, but if you bruise my ugu, you  buy it. A poor woman counts every leaf. My husband is blind and hungry. ” The guard’s hand hovered over the tomatoes, 1 in above a document worth 100 towers  and a blind man’s whole stolen life.

” A blind husband.  My brother is blind. ” Go, Feed him. ” And tell Chief  Maduka’s men a god with a conscience let a poor woman pass. ” She walked out slowly, her heart a drum,  and did not run until the building was three streets behind her, and the crown was safe in the  leaves.

” I have it, Somadina. The will. It was under the tomatoes when a guard almost almost  My hands are still shaking. ” You walked into my uncle’s shadow and walked out with my father’s name. Ebele. ” There is no word rich enough for what  you just did. ” Then do not spend one. Just win. ” Read it to me, Panduka,  so my husband can hear his father’s voice for the first time in three years.

” To my son, Somadina, blind or seeing, I leave 51%  and my whole faith. Let no brother of  mine tell you a cane makes a lesser man. ” Somadina wept  silently, the way strong men weep, and Ebele wiped his face and told him the sky outside was at that moment  the color of victory.

” 22 days, Director Ikemefuna. We have the  will. Now we need a doctor’s certificate, and we need it before Maduka forges one that buries me. ” I know a neurologist your uncle cannot buy. But Maduka has already booked his own panel to declare you insane.  ” Whoever files first wins the board.

Then we  file first. Ebele carried the wheel. I will not ask her to carry more. Maduka, you and I take  the doctor. ” Let my wife rest one day. ” I will rest  when your uncle does, Somadina. You forget I have a second front. My family. And today  my stepmother finally showed her new master’s face.

” Ebele, my child, come home. That blind man is a criminal, a debtor. They will arrest him any day. Come home before his shame  drowns you, too. ” You never called me your child when there was food to share,  mother. Now suddenly I am family? Who told you to fetch me? Say his name.  ” Zaki is gone.

” Nobody. A mother worries, that is all. There is There is money in it for you if you leave him quietly. A great deal  of money. Just sign. ” So Chief Maduka reached you.  I wondered how long. Tell him this, mother. You cannot buy back a daughter you already sold. The price only rises now. ” The stepmother left empty-handed and behind her stood a lender  with a 2 million debt and a chief who did not forgive failure.

She refused you. Of course she did. The blind  boy has grown a spine and a wife with steel in her. ” This marriage  is not weakness. It is a weapon. Change the plan. If I cannot break the wife, I  break the husband before the vote. 20 days. Find where the hides and find  his doctor first.

”  ” And so the hunt turned. The uncle stopped chasing a girl and started chasing a blind man carrying a will, a doctor, and a dangerous new reason to fight. ” Ibele, sister. ” I brought you soup, real soup with meat. I have been so worried about you in this this charming little home. May I sit? ” Meat soup,  Ozioma? You once watched me eat gari and water for a week and laughed.

Now you climb to a slum with meat. Who sent you? ” Criminal investigation  ” Nobody sent me. Can a sister not love her sister? People are saying your husband is  not a beggar at all. That he is well connected. Connected.  So the rumor has reached even your lazy ears. And suddenly the blind rat is a brother-in-law worth feeding.

Eat your own soup, Ozioma. Do not be bitter, Ibele. If there is money, we are family, we share. Mother says you can move back into the big room. The nice one with a fan, with a fan. The nice room. Three weeks ago it was for the goats. Tell mother the goats can keep it. ” I sleep beside a king now. Though he wears no crown yet.

” The sister left with her  meat soup uneaten and the news that the discarded girl had grown teeth and would not be eaten  a second time. ” You sound tired, Obele. Not tired of body, tired of people.  Your family has started circling now that they smell the gold on me. Then let it crawl and let them circle.

In 18 days, none of it matters. Did Director Ekweume secure the doctor? ”  ” The neurologist examined you this morning, Mr. Okosa, and signed. You are,  in his exact words, saner than the uncle trying to bury you. Then we have the will and the certificate. Two of the three walls Maduka built are down.

What is the third, Director? ”  ” The board itself. Nine votes. Maduka owns five  with money and fear. ” On the 30th day, if even one of your four blinks, you lose everything, legally, forever. ” And in a glass tower across the city, the  uncle was already at work on that one blink. With the two things  that always bought a frightened man, money and a knife.

” Director Ekweume  signed a doctor for my nephew. The old fool thinks he found a spine at 60. Bring me his file. ” Every man has a stain. That petty. ” Ekweume is clean, Chief. 40 years, no scandal. ”  ” But his daughter runs the clinic that owes the bank. Your bank. ” That is a stain you can  press.

” Then press it. Tell Ekweume  his daughter’s clinic closes the day after he votes against me. ” Watch the honest  man discover the price of his honesty. So, the uncle reached for the honest man through his child,  the oldest trick in the book of the powerful and the surest. ” Ebele, describe the boardroom to me.

Ekwueme drew  it once. Nine chairs, a long table. I need  to walk it in my mind until I can see it without eyes. ” Nine chairs,  dark wood, a window behind the head seat where your uncle sits. Somadina, you cannot walk  in there blind and alone. ” I will not be blind, Ebele. I will have you.

You will stand  at my shoulder and tell me who smiles, who sweats, who looks away. You are my eyes. ” Then teach me  the faces. Show me who I am watching for. ” If I am to be your eyes in a room of wolves, I must learn to smell wolves first. ” And so, night after night, a blind man taught a housemate the language of boardrooms.

And a housemate taught  a blind man to hope out loud. ” Soma, there is a problem.  Ekwueme did not answer his phone today. His office is dark. ” An honest man does not go quiet 3 days  before a war. ” Maduka reached him. Find out how, Panduka, and  find out fast. If our one clean  board vote has been bought or broken, the will and the doctor mean nothing.

” The old servant went into the night, and the count on the clock read 17  days, and one loyal man had just gone silent as a grave. ” So, Madina,  if Ekweume falls, what happens? Tell me the truth. You promised me the truth even when it is ugly. How bad is silent?  ” Silent is very bad, Ebele.

Without Ekweume, I have four  votes to Maduka’s five, and no way to turn a single frightened man. ” [snorts] ” Silent  may mean I lose. ” Then we find another vote. There are always people the powerful stepped on. Somewhere on that board sits  a man who hates your uncle more than he fears him.

” Mhm. ” And the blind man  smiled in the dark because his wife had just described, without knowing it, the exact plan that would win the war. ” I found Ekweume, Sọma. He is not bought. He is broken. ” Maduka threatened to close his daughter’s clinic, the one that treats poor children for free. ” So, my uncle put a good man’s child on the table.

” Of course he did. ” Do not hate Ekweume, Maduka. ” A father who would sell his child  is not the man we want anyway. ” Then we do not  ask him to lose his daughter. We save the clinic. Sọma Dina, you have 51%  of an empire. Can that empire not pay one  small bank? ” Mhm. Not until they vote, Ebele.

My money is frozen behind the very board Maduka controls. That is the trap. I am rich  on paper and poor in the hand. ” Then we find someone who rich in the hand. Or we find a vote that does not have a daughter to threaten. ” You said something. ” You said four. Remember your father. Who else does Maduka hate? ” There is one.

Mrs. Chidinma. My father built her from a market girl into a director. ” Maduka pushed her out of every big  deal. Called her the charity hire. ” Mr. Okwosha, forgive me. My daughter, the children she treats, I cannot vote against your uncle. I came only to say I am sorry and to warn you. ” You owe me no apology, director.

You owe your daughter your loyalty. But warn me of what? ” Your eyes  are doing what my wife used to do. Telling me bad news gently. ” Maduka has filed a police complaint. He says you are an impostor, a  fraud claiming to be his dead nephew. ” Tomorrow they may come to arrest a blind beggar. Hide.

” And so the man who owned the empire was to  be jailed as a man pretending to own it. And the truth itself became the crime as it always does under a thief. ” A will  means nothing until a board or a court accepts it, Abele. Until the 30th day, on paper, Maduka is the Okwosha  and I am a blind stranger with a story.

” Then paper is the enemy and paper can be beaten by people. ”  ” Give me Mrs. Chidinma. A market girl who was mocked will listen to a market girl who was sold. ” So, a housemaid went to persuade a director. One woman the world underestimated speaking to another in the language only the overlooked understand.

” You are the  blind boy’s wife. They said he married a nobody. And they send the  nobody to me. What could you possibly offer that Maduka cannot outbid? ”  ” Nothing, madam, except the truth. Chief Maduka called you the charity hire. So, Madina’s father called you a director. On the 30th  day, you choose which man was right about you.

” Bold. And if I vote for your blind husband and he loses, Maduka ends my career in  an afternoon. I have clawed too high to fall for a stranger’s tears. ” Then do not vote for tears, madam. Vote for the girl the market laughed at, who a great man  saw and lifted. If you bury that boy, you bury the proof that men like his father exist.

” Mrs. Chidinma said nothing, but she did not say no. And in the arithmetic of a boardroom war, a maybe from a wronged woman is worth more than a bribe. ” My nephew went to Chidinma, the charity hire. He is counting votes like a real Okwousa now. Who is teaching  a blind beggar to fight? Find the hand behind him.

” It is the wife,  chief. The village girl. She carried something from Barrister Eze’s office last week. She visited Chidinma  today. ” She is his whole campaign. ” A housemaid is running against  me. The insult of it. Fine. If the wife is the weapon, we break the  wife. Send men to that slum tonight.

Frighten her home for good. ” And so, 16 days from the vote, the uncle stopped fighting the blind man’s lawyers and started sending fists to a one-room house at the edge of the city. ” Somadina,  there are men outside. Three of them. They have been standing under the mango tree for an hour, watching our door, not speaking.

This is not a robbery. ” No. It is a message.  Maduka has sent them for you, Ebele, because he finally understands you are the dangerous one. Stand behind me. ” A blind man still has a voice. ” I will not stand behind you. I will stand beside you. ” If they came  to frighten the beggar’s wife, let them meet the woman who walked a will past their master’s guards.

” And two people  the world had thrown away turned to face the door together as the count on the clock fell and the first real  blow of the war came knocking. ” Blind man, we have a message  from a chief. Sign this paper, say you are not who you claim, and leave the city. ” Or we make the wife a widow.

” I have signed away 3 years of my life to men like  you. I will not sign a fourth. ” Tell your chief, a blind man finally  learned to say no. ” Wrong answer, Hold him. ” And you, woman,  watch what a chief does to a beggar who forgets his place. ” This is a small taste of the vote. ” They struck a man  who could not see the blows coming, and Ebele threw herself over him and took on her own back what was meant for his head.

” Beat me  instead, then. You brave men, three of you, for one blind husband and his wife. Tell Maduka this. Every bruise you leave is a vote you just  lost. ” The blows stopped,  not for mercy, but because even hired men grow uneasy when the victim shames them louder  than the pain.

” Enough. The chief said frighten, not harm. But hear me, woman, the police come for your husband at dawn. ”  ” Fraud. ” Enjoy your last night with a free man. ” And they left, and Ebele held her husband in the dark, both of them bleeding, and neither of them, for one stubborn moment, ”  ” willing to weep first.

” You are hurt, Ebele. I heard every blow you took for  me. A blind man cannot even shield his own wife. What kind of husband have I made you? ” The kind  worth shielding, Somadina. I have taken beatings my whole life for nothing, for spilled soup, for being born. Tonight, I took  one for love.

It barely hurt. ” At dawn,  exactly as promised, the police came, and the whole slum watched them lead away a blind man in handcuffs like a common criminal. ” Somadina Okwosa, you are charged with impersonating a deceased heir and defrauding in family. Chief Maduka has signed the complaint. Come quietly.

I am not impersonating my own name, officer. But I know how this works. A chief signs, a blind man bleeds. Ebele, the will. ” Protect the will.  It is everything. ” They cannot hold you, Somadina. The vote is in 12 days. I will bring  the will, the doctor, Chidinma, everything. You will not rot in a cell for owning what is yours.

” The neighbors who had mocked the beggar now went quiet because there is nothing louder than a wronged man dragged past you in chains  you cannot break. ” You see, Ebele? A criminal. I warned you. The whole city says your husband is a fraud and a thief. Come home now ”  ” while there is still a home that will have you.

” The whole city says what Chief Maduka paid him to say, mother.  And now, conveniently, you sing his song. How much did the anointment cost him? Or did he only forgive your debt? ” Watch your mouth, girl. I am still your mother. ” Sign the papers Maduka’s lawyer brought. Leave the jailbird, and your debt to this family is finally settled.

” I have  no debt to this family. You sold me and called it charity. Keep your papers. When my husband walks free, you will wish you had chosen the daughter  over the chief. ” And the stepmother left and did  not know she had just placed her whole family on the losing side of a war with 11 days left to run.

” Ebele, it is bad. With Somadina a cell, Maduka told the board he is a proven fraud. ” [gasps] ” We are losing them one by one. ”  ” Then I visit each one myself. Maduka. If Maduka can work the board with  lies, I can work it with the truth in my own scrubbing woman voice. Where do I start?  ” Child, you are one woman bruised, with a husband  in jail, and a whole empire against you.

Even Sọma is asking me to tell you to run while you still can. ” Then take a message back to my husband in  his cell. Tell him his wife said no. Tell him I did not marry a blind beggar to  abandon a blind billionaire. I am staying. I am fighting.  ” And so, at the darkest hour, with the heir in chains, and the clock at 11  days, the discarded girl squared her bruised shoulders and went, alone, to war.

Because the powerful always forget one thing. ”  ” I have posted his bail, child. The fraud charge is a paper tiger. The moment we show the board the real will, the impostor’s story passes away. Your husband walks free today. ” Thank you, sir. But free for how long? Maduka will only sign another lie.

We do not need Sọmadina out of his cell. We need him back on his father’s throne. ”  ” 10 days. ” You have the mind of a lawyer and the courage of a soldier wrapped in a market  wrapper. Your father-in-law would have adored you. ” Mhm. ” Now go. Win the room. ” Ebele. ” They told me you took the beating, walked the board, refused your mother, and  build me out all while I sat useless in the dark.

” You gave  me my spine, Somadina. Do not complain now that I am using it. Sit. Rest your eyes, even if they  cannot see. Tomorrow we count votes together. ” And a man who had lost his sight  found in a slum the one thing his mansion never held. Someone who fought for him when  he could not fight for himself.

” You came back, market girl.  With a bruised face and a husband just out of a cell. Most women would have taken Maduka’s money and run. Why are you still here? ” Because Maduka’s money buys silence,  madam. And I have been silent my whole life. I am done. ” Vote with us,  and the woman they called the charity higher becomes the woman who saved the house.

And if we lose? ” Then we  lose standing up, madam. Which is still taller than winning on our knees. But we will not lose. ”  ” I have counted. With you, we have five. Maduka  has three. And one man is still deciding. ” I am in,  Ebele. God help me. A blind boy and a housemate have shamed me into bravery.

Now go and find your sixth vote. Because Maduka will not sleep tonight,  and neither should you. ” One vote  turned. The five that stood against the blind man was now four, and his four had become five. ”  ” With the last frightened director still holding the final word. ” The wife turned Chidinma, a housemaid unpicked in a week what took me three years to build. Enough games.

Bring the girl to me. ” Every soldier has a price. Let us  find hers. ” And so Ebele was brought not to a slum, but to a tower. To a room with a view of the whole city her husband’s father had built. ” Sit,  my dear. You are cleverer than my entire legal team, so I will not insult you with small numbers.

50  million naira. A house. ” Mhm. ” A car. Leave the blind boy, and disappear rich. ” 50 million. ” That is a lot  of soup, Chief. Three weeks ago my whole family sold me for two. You must be  very frightened of a housemaid to offer 25 times my price. ” Frightened? I am generous. That boy will lose, girl.

Blind men do not run empires. The world knows this. ” Take the money, and be the one wise person  in this whole affair. ” You keep  saying blind men cannot rule. But you have  watched, and you have not seen, and between the two of you, Chief, I think you are the blinder man. ” You would  toss away 50 million for a in a slum? What kind of woman does that? What is he to you ”  ” that a fortune cannot outweigh him? ”  ” He is the first person who ever looked at me, Chief, and he cannot even see.

Keep your  50 million. I already own the only thing in this city you will never be rich enough to buy. ” And she walked  out of a tower past a fortune the way she had walked out of a vault past a lion  with empty hands and a full heart, and the war now truly begun. ” The sixth  vote, Sọma, is Director Balogun.

Maduka humiliated him once, but he is a coward. He will vote for whoever he fears most on the 30th  day. Fear, not truth. ” Then we do not give him  truths. We give him a bigger fear than Maduka. ” Ebele, on the day of the vote, ”  ” you and I are going to make an entire boardroom afraid of the blind man.

” Together. ”  ” And the plan formed in the dark, quiet and patient, the kind that turns the last frightened man in the room, and with him the whole stolen empire. ” Gentlemen, ” [clears throat] ” tomorrow  is a formality. My blind nephew has a stolen will and a village wife. I have this board, this city, and 3  years of your loyalty.

Relax. We have already won. ” And if the will is  genuine, Chief? Barrister Eze swears your brother signed it. 51%  is 51% even for a blind man. That is not  a formality. ” Then we call it a forgery. A blind man cannot read what he signed, so who can prove what my brother truly wrote? Tomorrow, that will is a fake because I say it is.

Papers obey the powerful.  ” And the uncle slept soundly, certain that a document was only as true as the richest man in the room allowed it to be. ” So, Madina, Maduka will call the will a forgery.  I heard it from Chidinma. ” You will say a blind man cannot prove his own father’s hand. How do we prove a signature to men who do not want to see it? ” We do not  prove the signature, Ebele. We prove the crest.

Bring me my father’s cane. The ebony  one. ” The silver head has held the answer for 3 years, and no thief ever thought to look. ” The cane. So, Madina, it is just It is your walking stick. I have handed it to you a hundred times. ” What is on the silver head that a whole boardroom will believe? ” Turn it to the light  and read the underside for me.

Slowly. ” Tell me  exactly what is carved there in the metal, where a blind man’s fingers have traced it every night  for 3 years. ” There is a crest, a lion over a bridge, ”  ” and words, tiny words around the edge. ” A long number. Like an account.  Or a key. ” That number is my  father’s private company seal, Ebele.

” [snorts] ” It matches the mark on the original will,  and on the vault, and on nothing my uncle could ever forge. ” That cane is my whole identity, hidden in plain  sight. And the housemaid understood, at last, why a blind beggar had never once, in all their poverty, let a single stranger hold his simple wooden cane.

” Soma, barrister has quietly cleared the debt on Ekweume’s daughter’s clinic, [clears throat] not from the frozen company, from the little your father kept aside. Then Maduka’s hold on him is  broken. Tell Ekweume his daughter is safe, and he is free to remember my father. There is trouble, Soma.

Maduka’s men broke into barrister Eze’s office tonight. ” [snorts] ” They took files, threatened  him. ” He fears they mean to say the will was never really sealed. ” Let them take the office, Maduka. The will is not there. It is here,  in a slum, under a mat, guarded by the one woman in this city my uncle keeps underestimating.

He raids towers.  ” And the doctor’s certificate, Soma Dina? If Maduka calls you insane in front of the board, a piece of paper will not stop him. He needs to see  you as sound. They all do. ” Then they will not just read  that I am sane, Ebele. They will watch a blind man walk into his father’s boardroom, name every person at the table, and take back his house without stumbling once.

You will be my  eyes. They will think it is a miracle. ” Then teach me the last of it tonight. Every chair,  every face, every name. Tomorrow I do Do miss one. Tomorrow, in that room, my husband sees everything, and no one will know it is me. ” So, through the final night, they walked  the boardroom in the dark, a blind man and his eyes, until he could cross a room he had never seen and  greet nine faces he could not look at.

” Adbele, whatever happens tomorrow, ”  ” win or lose, I need to say this while I am still a poor man, ” before the money  can make it sound like a lie. ” I did not fall in love with a nurse, or an ally, or a pair of eyes. ” Then what, Soma Dina? What did a billionaire fall in love with in a girl the whole world returned like spoiled goods? ” I fell in love with the one person  who treated me like a king when I had nothing and could not even see her face  to thank her.

Tomorrow, the world learns my name, but you knew my worth in the dark.  ” And Adbele, who had never in her life been told she was worth anything,  sat in a slum beside a blind billionaire and finally, quietly, believed it. ” Sleep well, nephew, wherever you are hiding.  Tomorrow, I bury you on paper for the last time.

A blind boy  and a house maid against the whole house of Ukwasa. It was never  even a contest. ” And the blind man in a borrowed suit, on the arm of a house maid in her one good wrapper, walked toward a glass  tower to take back an empire with a cane, a will, and the truth. Well, the blind beggar came in person, and he brought his housemate.

Gentlemen, observe. This is the fraud who claims to be my dead nephew. Someone find  him a chair by the door. ” I do not need a chair by the door, uncle. I know this  room. Chidinma sits on your left. Ekwueme two seats down. Balogun by the window, sweating as he always did. Shall I go on? ” The board froze  because a blind man had just named every face at a table he had not entered in 3 years.

”  ” Without one mistake, as if the dark had given him better eyes than theirs. ” A cheap trick. Someone whispered the seating to him outside. A blind man is still a blind man. He cannot read, cannot sign, cannot rule.  That is the whole point of this vote. ” Then let us  read together, uncle.

Ebele, place my father’s will on the table. The original. The one your men could not find  in Barrister Eze’s office last night because it was never there. ” Here it is, gentlemen. Sealed by the late Chief Okwosa. 51%  of this company and every word of it left to his son, Somadina. Blind or seeing,  his exact words.

” A forgery, obviously. A blind boy and a village girl print a paper and call it my brother’s will. Where is the proof? A signature a blind man cannot even have watched being made? This is theater. Toss it out. ” I expected the word forgery,  uncle. You have shouted it for 3 years. So, I did not come to argue a signature.

I came to to a seal. Ebele, my cane. Turn the silver head to the  light and read them the number carved beneath. ” A lion over a bridge, the house of Okwasa, and the number carved into the  silver, 947113. The same number, gentlemen, that is stamped on the wax of this sealed will. ” I certify it.

That is the late chief’s private seal number.  He struck it into three things only. His cane, his will, and the company vault. No forger ever knew it existed. It cannot be faked because it was never public.  ” And the whole board leaned toward a wooden cane a beggar had carried through a slum and saw at last ”  ” a crown that had been hiding in a blind man’s hand the entire time.

” Even so,  even so, a will means nothing if the heir is not sound. My nephew is not merely blind, he is disturbed,  unfit. I have a medical panel that will testify he cannot manage his own shoelaces, ”  ” let alone a company. ” And I have a neurologist your bank could not buy, chief, who examined this man last week and  signed that he is entirely sound.

I filed it with the registrar this morning. Before yours. It is already law. ” So, the will is real. ”  ” And my mind is sound. And the only fraud in this room, gentlemen, is the man  who has spent my inheritance for 3 years while calling me the thief. Now, shall we finally vote? ” Vote then, and vote wisely.

I still hold this board. ”  ” Chidima, Balogun, all of you, remember who signs your bonuses. A dead man’s paper  does not pay your children’s school fees. ” I do. You called me the charity hire, Maduka, for  11 years. This boy’s father called me a director. Today I find out which of  you was right.

I vote for Somadina Ojukwuosa. The house returns to its son. ” One voice broke the wall, and the room that had feared the uncle for 3 years discovered the strange cold thrill of watching  the strongest man present begin, at last, to sweat. ” Chidinma, you ungrateful you charity. Sit down. Balogun, Balogun, you are the sensible one.

You know what happens to men who cross me. Yes, Balogun. Vote for the winning side. But look carefully  at which side that is. ” A will that cannot be faked.  A mind that is sound. A board already turning. ”  ” And a whole city about to hear how a chief robbed a blind man. Which side survives tomorrow? ” I I have been afraid of you for 11 years, Maduka.

But that boy just walked  blind into this room and saw more than any of us. I am tired of being the coward at the window. I vote for Somadina.  ” Six votes. It was over. And a blind man who had been dragged out of  this building in handcuffs stood at its head, the rightful owner, on the arm of a girl the world had thrown in the trash.

” This is a coup. A theater. A trick.  Ah, you cannot do this to me. I BUILT THIS. I RUN IT. FOR 3 years I made every decision while he sat blind in a slum. It is mine. It is mine. ” You did not build it, uncle. You stole it the week my father passed away from a nephew who could not see you do it. You sent  thugs to beat my wife.

You had me jailed as a fraud. You offered her 50 million to abandon me. And it is all documented, chief. The forged insanity  panel, the police complaint you signed, the men you hired. The company’s lawyers are already downstairs.  You will not go to a bonus. You will go to a courtroom. ” Ebele, you.

This is  you, a housemaid. I offered you a fortune and you did this to me instead.  ” You should have looked closer. The blind one and I could always see you. The kind you sold,  chief, and never bothered to know. You saw a village  girl and a blind man and thought you saw two nobodies. That was your  last mistake.

You should have looked closer. The blind one and I could always see you. ” And the guards Maduka once commanded let him out of the tower he had stolen  past the very door he had once thrown a blind man through. And the board did not rise for him, not one man. ” Ebele, my daughter,  my darling.

We always believed in you, you know that. Family is family. Surely now, with all this, you will remember your poor mother who raised you. ” You are right, mother. Family is  family. So, here is what your family gets. The death Maduka held over you is cancelled  because I asked my husband to clear it.

You will not go to the streets. ” Oh, Ebele, ”  ” bless you. I knew you were a good girl. I always said so. I always We can be a  family again. ” The fine room is yours. The fan, everything. ” I am  not finished, Mother. You keep your house. But you will never again spend one naira of ours.

And  you will never again call me daughter to my face and burden to my back. Kindness,  yes. Closeness, no. You sold that for 2 million. ” And the stepmother learned the hardest lesson the greedy ever learn. That forgiveness and reward are not the same thing,  and a bought conscience cannot be refunded.

” Gentlemen of the board, my first  act as chairman, every worker Maduka underpaid is repaid  in full. And we open a foundation for the blind and the poor of this city. Run by the one person here who ever saw me when I was both. Ebele, come here. Let me do this the  way my father would have.

Not as a rich man rewarding a servant. As a blind man thanking the woman who was his eyes when the whole world shut theirs. ” So, Maduka, everyone is watching. You do not have to. I did not do any of it for a title or a tower. I did it because you were mine, and no one hurts what is mine  and calls it justice.

” I know. That is exactly why I am doing it. The world  saw a blind beggar and a discarded girl. But you had the only eyes in this city that ever mattered.  And I had the only heart that ever counted you as gold. And a blind man kissed the hand of a housemaid  in a boardroom of powerful men, and every one of them, for the first time in their comfortable lives, understood  what it truly means to see.

Six months, Soma, and  the Okwosa Foundation already teaches a hundred blind children to read with their hands. Your father is smiling  somewhere. ” My father left me an empire,  Panduka. But it took  losing my eyes and gaining a wife to learn what he really wanted me to do with it.

” He ”  ” Not to own the city. To open my hands to it. ” The new wing is ready, Soma Dina. ” [laughter] ” We named it after your father. And the first  row of desks, I saved for the children whose families called them a burden. They will never hear that word here. ” Chief Maduka  stood before a real judge, not a bought board, and learned that a stolen empire, once returned to the  light, testifies against the thief in a voice no money can silence.

He was not merely removed. ” Ebele,  please. Mother sent me. The market has turned on us. Everyone knows what we did. No one will trade with the family that sold a girl to a billionaire and mocked him. We are becoming what we made you. ”  ” I know, Ozioma. I have heard. And I could  let you drown in it, the way you once watched me eat garri and water and laughed.

That would  be justice. But justice and I have never been  close friends. ” [snorts] ” Then you will help us. After everything. After the soup, the goats, the wedding, the annulment papers, all of it, you would still lift your hand for me? ” I will lift my  hand, but not into your pocket, sister.

There is a job at the foundation.  Honest work, honest pay, among the poor you look down on. Take it and learn their faces, or refuse it and keep starving  proud. That is the only door I open. ” And Ozioma,  who had never worked an honest day, took a broom in the house of the sister she despised and began, slowly, the  long lesson of becoming someone worth forgiving.

” You gave your step sister a broom, ”  ” Ebele. The same broom they gave you. ” That is either the cruelest thing I have ever heard, or the kindest. With you, I can never tell. ” It is the kindest, Somadina. A broom taught me who I was when I had nothing. Let it  teach her. I am not punishing my family.

I am giving them the one thing they never gave me, a chance  to be better. ” And on a Saturday, six months from the day a town laughed at a wedding,  they held another in the same church with the same bride and the same blind groom. And nobody laughed. ” The first time we married, Ebele, you led a blind  beggar to the altar and a whole town mocked you.

” Describe this one for me. Every face. I want to see the day the mockers came to bow.  ” The church is full, Somadina. The board, the workers, the blind  children in the front row. And in the back, quiet, my family, who came not to laugh this time, but ”  ” to watch a girl they tossed away become the reason this city  has hope.

” And you, Ebele? ” [snorts] ” I still cannot see the one face I would trade the whole empire to look at once. Describe yourself to me. Be honest. Tell me what a blind man married. ” You married a woman in a white dress,  Somadina, who is crying and does not care who sees it. A woman nobody wanted, ”  ” standing beside a man nobody could fool.

Both of us finally, finally home. ” He reached up and read her wet face with  his fingers, the only way he had ever known her, and found there everything the sighted spend their whole lives looking for  and miss. ” They said I married beneath me, a house maid, a nobody. Let me answer the whole city at last.

I did not marry beneath me. I married the only person  who was ever truly above the rest of you. ” Her family [snorts] humiliated her and married her off to a blind man,  certain they had thrown away the least of them. A person’s worth  is never in what the eyes can see. It is in the heart that keeps loving in the dark.

The proud looked at a blind beggar and a discarded girl, and were the only ones in the story who never truly saw.
