Cruel Woman Forced Poor Maid to Kneel on Cold Bricks, Unaware Her Son Had Fallen in Love With Her

PART 2:

Salt sets stains. ” Yes, ma’am. ” My sister says a girl whose whole family dies like that. Father, mother, then the uncle. People should ask questions. Some people carry bad luck like a disease. ” Ma’am, my parents died in a car accident. A truck crossed the median. It was investigated. It wasn’t ” Don’t narrate your tragedy to me.

Stop saying yes, ma’am like that. You say it like it cost you something. ” I’m sorry, ma’am. ” That’s better. Sorry suits you. It’s the only word you say like you mean it. I counted it and I will count it again when you return. ” Are you out of your mind? Do you people own the road now? You own the stores and the houses and now you own the crosswalk, too? ” Lady, the light was red.

For you, it was red. ” So, it’s my fault you drive like the road is your father’s farm? ” My father’s Okay. Are you hurt? Just tell me if you’re hurt. ” Don’t change the subject. ” The subject is I almost killed you and I’d like to KNOW IF I DID hurt you. Young lady, that man stood on his brakes like the world was ending.

Maybe say thank you. ” Thank you? He should watch where he’s going. ” You walked into the road against the light. You’re shaking. ” Don’t tell me what I’m doing. ” Here. For the groceries. The jar that broke, the oranges, take it. ” So, you think I’m a beggar? ” That’s what this is. ” Keep your money.

Keep your money and your big truck and your sorry. I don’t need it. ” Miss, I watched four oranges go under a bus. You need it a little. ” Keep it. ” You’re going through a lot. ” I’m going through a lot. ” That one’s a Harrington maid. The poor ones always come out of that house angry and wet-eyed at the same time. ” [laughter] ” The Harrington, what are the odds? ” My son, let me look at you. You’re thin.

Were they not feeding you in London? ” Mom, I gained 10 lb. There’s a bakery next to the office. I’m basically made of bread now. Welcome home, son. You look like a man who’s been paying his own rent. It suits you. ” Gifts first, hugs later. House rules. Get down here and hug your brother. I suffered while you were gone.

Do you know what it’s like being an only child with these two? ” You were never an only child. You were an only audience. ” Where is the matching wallet? ” It cost extra. Love doesn’t come with a wallet. ” I knew there’d be a catch. There’s always a catch with men. Oh, this perfume is lovely.

Where is that girl? She should be here. The maid, Ivy. I sent her to the store an hour ago. Trust me to have a lazy one on the one day that matters. Ivy. An hour and a half for six blocks. Must you follow men up and down every time I send you out? ” Ma’am, there was an accident at the light. A car almost ” Look at you.

You look like a rag from a gutter. On today of all days, my son is in that dining room. You will serve that dinner perfectly. If you embarrass me in front of him, I will bury you alive in this house and plant flowers over you. Do you understand? ” Yes, ma’am. ” Your eyes are red. Have you been crying? ” No, ma’am. ” Good, because crying is not on the menu.

Go. ” Whoever cooked this needs a raise. I’ve had roast in four countries and this wins. ” The maid cooked it. Don’t get excited. Cooking is the one thing her hands can do without breaking something. ” We’re out of water. ” Ivy, the water. Must I do THE THINKING FOR EVERYONE IN THIS HOUSE? ” It’s fine, I’ll get it.

” Sit down. ” It’s a pitcher of water. ” Daniel, sit down. Are you a houseboy? ” I’m a person who’s thirsty. ” You are my son. My son does not fetch water in his own house while a grown woman is paid to breathe our air. Ivy! ” [sighs] ” I’m sorry for the delay, ma’am. ” Go and stand by the door in case anything else is needed.

” [sighs] ” I want the crispy end piece of the roast. The end piece is the whole point. ” She can bring it. ” Mom, I lived alone for 2 years. I know where kitchens keep things. ” You You can’t be in here. Please. Please get out. ” You work here. The crosswalk. I thought about you all the way home and you work in my mother’s kitchen? ” Lower your voice, sir. Please.

If she finds you here with me, I’m finished. This job is everything I have. I’m begging you. ” Hey, calm down. Nobody’s finished. ” Sir, you have been abroad for 2 years and I have been here for all of them. You don’t know. Get out. ” Daniel, what are you doing in the kitchen with her hands on your shirt? ” Looking for the end piece of the roast.

” Ivy, is this why the store took an hour and a half laying groundwork? ” Ma’am, no. ” She hasn’t done anything. I walked in, she told me to get out before you fired her. She pushed me out. If you’re angry at somebody, be angry at the man who wouldn’t leave. That’s me. ” There is no end piece left.

Back to your chair, you. Back to the wall where you belong. Ivy, take my son’s bag up to his room. The big one. Carefully, there’s glass in it. ” I’ve got it. ” Daniel, give her the bag. ” No. Momma weighs 50 lb. I packed it. I know which end has the books.  ” It weighs 50 lb and she is paid to carry it. Give her the bag.

” She’s paid to clean the house. The bag is mine. The bag that carries it is mine. I’ve done it in 14 airports. Good night, everybody. The roast was incredible. ” So, this is your game. You want to behave like you’re the good one and I’m the bad one in front of my son making him pity you.

I know exactly what you are doing. ” Ma’am, I swear I asked him nothing. ” I have run this house for 26 years. I will not be displaced in my son’s eyes by a charity case with a mop. I will finish you in this house. Not fire you. Firing would be mercy. Day by day until you beg to leave and then I’ll deduct something for the begging.

” Ma’am. ” Not another word. The sitting room needs vacuuming. It’s 10:00 at night and I want it done now. For what it’s worth, the pushing him out thing was genuinely funny. Doesn’t change anything. You’re still going down. ” It’s open. ” Sir, can I have 1 minute? ” Sure. ” I’ll stand at the door.

Ma’am has rules about the furniture. I want to apologize for today. You didn’t deserve the things I said and I’m sorry, truly. And I’m begging you, please don’t tell your mother. If she knows I insulted you in the street, she’ll use it forever. ” Can I tell you something? You’re not apologizing for what you said.

You’re apologizing because you figured out who I am. ” That’s not true. ” It is, a little. And it’s okay, it’s human. But for the record, the apology would have counted even if I turned out to be nobody. ” I had a bad day, sir. ” Call me Daniel. Sir is my father. ” I had a bad day, Daniel. I have a lot of them.

That’s not an excuse and I am sorry. ” Bad day, huh? I was never going to report you. Not to anyone. You told me to keep my money and walked off with four oranges down in a broken jar. You were the most honest person I met all week. ” Honest and rude. ” Honest and rude. I’ll take it. Get some sleep. And Ivy, the roast really was the best I’ve had in four countries.

” What were you doing upstairs? Last night in his room? ” Ma’am, I went to apologize for the kitchen. ” You went to a man’s bedroom at midnight in my house outside the back courtyard. Now. Kneel. ” Ma’am. ” Kneel on the ground. Trash like you belongs on the floor. You will kneel there until I remember you exist.

If you get up before I send for you, you will sleep there tonight with the garbage cans. ” Ma’am, please. My knees. Please. ” Your knees should have thought of that before they walked you to my son’s door. Kneel and don’t pray. If I hear praying, I’ll know it’s about me and the ground will get colder. ” I’m telling you, Marcus, it’s her.

The woman from the crosswalk. She’s the family maid. ” That’s a movie. That’s literally a movie. ” It’s a problem. You should see this house. My mother talks to this girl like she’s furniture that disappoints her. Every time I defend her, it lands on her twice as hard. I carried my own bag and this morning she wasn’t at breakfast and nobody will tell me where she is.

” Hm. My man Daniel, who dated half of London, is lying on his childhood bed stressing about a girl who told him to keep his money. You like her? ” She’s got fire. Broke, shaken, and she still wouldn’t take the money. There’s nobody real in this family except Dad and then there’s her. ” Careful, brother.

Rich boy, poor maid, cruel mother. You know how that movie ends. Be the writer, Danny. Don’t be an actor in somebody else’s script. ” Die. I want you to give Ivy one of your gifts. Pick something. The scarf. ” Give my gift to the maid? Did London break your brain? ” Fine. I’ll send you money. Buy her some things.

Real things, decent clothes. She’s about your size. 5,000. Right now. From you, it can be a gift from the ” Right now. ” You know what? That’s actually sweet. I’ll do it. ” You will? ” Sure. Send the money. Anything for my favorite brother. ” I’m your only brother. ” Keep competing. You might hold the title. ”  ” The hell? How long have you been out here? ” Daniel, please.

If she sees you ” Get up. ” I can’t. She said if I get up, I sleep out here. ” Get up. You are not a slave. Look at me. I am your boss. Her husband owns this house and I am his son. And between us, we outrank her temper. Stand up. Whatever the problem is, I will face it. ” You’ll face it today and fly back to London next month, and I’ll still be here facing her.

” I said stand up. ” So, the maid climbs into my son’s arms in the dark, and I’m the wicked one for asking questions. ” She couldn’t stand. She collapse if I let go. How long was she out here, Mom? Answer me. ” Until she learns something. That’s how lessons work. ” Stella, that’s somebody’s child you’re calling trash.

” Don’t start with me, Raymond. ” You had a human being kneel on brick for 12 hours in November. Diane, come here. Stand next to your brother. Now, imagine you’re 23 working in someone’s house, and their mother makes you kneel on cold brick all day. Imagine it. I’ll wait. ” Dad, that’s insane.

Why would I ever be a maid? ” That’s the answer, isn’t it? She can’t imagine it. Neither can you. If someone punished Diane like this, would you call it a lesson? ” You’re comparing my angel Diane to a maid? ” I’m comparing a human being to a human being. You’re the one sorting them into species. She is paid to clean, not to bleed.

There’s a difference, and if you don’t know it, this house has bigger problems than dust. Daniel, take her inside. First aid kit in my study, second drawer. Her knees before anything else tonight. Yes, Dad. ” Raymond, you will not undermine me in front of the staff. ” The staff is a 23-year-old girl bleeding on our bricks, and I am embarrassed, physically embarrassed, to be explaining that to my wife.

” Mom, he sent me $5,000 for her today, for clothes. Come inside, Diane. We need to talk quietly. You don’t have to do this. I can do it myself. ” Hold still. This is going to sting. You’ve done that before. They’re not making a sound. Where’d you learn that? ” Practice. ” That’s not a funny answer. ” It wasn’t a funny question.

” There. You’re off your feet till tomorrow. ” I’ve had worse. ” I know. And that’s the problem.  You say it like it is normal. ” I can’t be off my feet. Your father’s dinner, he eats at 9:00? ” I’ll serve my father’s dinner. Lock the door behind me and lie down. That’s an order from management. ” You’re not management.

” I’m management adjacent. Well, this is new. She’s resting. Doctor’s orders. The doctor being me. Good. Long overdue. ” Sit down, son. That girl has been through a lot in this house. You’ve noticed 2 weeks of it. Try 2 years. Your mother and Diane, I told myself Stella was strict, old-fashioned.

A man tells himself a lot of things when the truth is inconvenient to his schedule. But tonight wasn’t a slide. Tonight was a cliff. She needs protection. She’s not as strong as she pretends. Strength like hers is just pain with good posture. She won’t accept protection. She won’t even accept oranges. Then don’t fight like a boy throwing your body between her and every slap.

Fight like a Harrington. Change the conditions, not the moment. Be here consistently, every day, not just the day she bleeds. And Daniel, be sure. Whatever you’re starting to feel, be sure it’s her and not the rescue. A person isn’t a project. If you take her out of the fire, you have to let her stand on her own ground afterwards.

” No. Sit on that chair. Have you eaten? ” I’ll eat later. ” What time is later? Ivy, when did you last eat? ” Yesterday, I think. Ma’am says staff meals come out of wages, and my wages are mostly deductions, so ” Stop. Come with me. ” Daniel, if she counts that rice ” Let her count it. Let her weigh it.

Let her call the police about it. Eat. ” Thank you for the food. For putting the fork down straight. Nobody set a place for me since my mother died. ” This is the last time you go hungry in this house. You eat when the family eats. Nobody starves in a house with a full pantry. That’s barbaric. We’re not barbarians.

” Some of us are. ” Not on my watch. ”  ” Ivy, half this rice is gone. I know exactly how much rice I make, and half of it is gone. A thief. I feed you, I house you, and you steal out of my pots like a rat? ” Ma’am, please. ” Rats get what rats get. ” Ma! ” What were you going to do with that? ” Teach a thief what happens.

” There’s no thief. I served her last night. One plate because she hadn’t eaten in 2 days in a house with a pantry you could hide a car in. Put the pot down. ” You served her from my pots? ” From dad’s pots in dad’s house to a person dad employs. You won’t deal with her over food. Never over food, not while I’m standing here.

” You’ve been home 2 weeks and already you know everything about running my house. ” I know nothing about running your house. I know something about not starving people. Somebody taught it to me before I was 5 in this house. I’ve been trying to remember who because it sure wasn’t the woman holding the hot pot.

How long? Don’t do that. You know what I’m asking. The deductions, the kneeling, the not eating. How long? ” From the very first day I moved into this house. ” 2 years. ” 2 years, 1 month and some days. I stopped counting. Counting was making it longer. ” Why do you stay? Ivy, there are other jobs. ” Sometimes life doesn’t give you too many choices.

It gives you one and it tells you to be grateful and you learn to be grateful because the alternative is remembering what you lost. Can I keep folding? ” That’s an answer people give when the real answer is worse. ” And yet here I am. I have no family, no references except the places I ran from, no degree, I left school in my second year.

I have a social security number, a photo in a bent frame in this room, the room that keeps the rain off. So yes, my choices aren’t exactly multiple. ” Yeah, I’ll fold too. Do that again. ” Do what? Fold? Daniel sent money ages ago, a gift from the family. Open it. ” Oh, thank you. These are Thank you, Miss Diane. ” They’re from a thrift store.

Well, some are mine, hand-me-downs, vintage. It’s more than anyone’s ever done for you. So let me hear the gratitude properly. Thank you, Miss Diane. ” That’s it? ” You know what your problem is? You walk around with that nobody has it worse face. It’s aggressive.  Did your late mother ever buy you anything? Anything at all? Because the way you look at a shopping bag, I’m thinking never. Don’t.

” Excuse me? ” Don’t talk about my mother. You can hand me trash and call it a gift. You can take your brother’s money and buy me scraps and make me thank you. But you don’t say her name. Not with your mouth. ” Ungrateful little gutter rat. I say what I like IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE. ” WHAT IS GOING ON IN HERE? ” $5,000. I sent you $5,000.

” And I spent it how I spent it. You didn’t say there was a minimum wage on the clothes? ” That’s not a minimum wage. That’s a minimum humanity. ” Don’t you yell at my daughter. NOBODY YELLS AT MY DAUGHTER BUT ME. ” Then maybe you should have done it once in 24 YEARS. LOOK AT HER FACE. She hit her over being asked not to insult a dead woman.

How do you two sleep at night? This isn’t strictness. This is cruelty. Emotional, mental, physical, every single day to a person who can’t fight back and you do IT BECAUSE SHE CAN’T FIGHT BACK. WHAT DID SHE DO? WHAT DID SHE EVER DO to you? ” SHE EXISTS, DANIEL. THAT’S WHAT SHE DID. SHE EXISTS IN OUR HOUSE LIKE A LIKE A CHARITY ADVERTISEMENT.

” And there it is. She exists. God forbid an innocent, hardworking woman just wants to live. Bravo. That’s my son. Two weeks home and he says what I’ve swallowed for 2 years. I heard the question and I’ll repeat it. What did she do? You had her kneel on brick in November. Your daughter buys her garbage with charity money and slaps her for grieving.

And you stand there, both of you, in a mansion. Are you the first millionaires in the world? Does money come with a license to step on people? If they handed me that license, I’d like to think I’d have handed it back. ” So that’s it. The two men of this house against the two women. All because of a maid. ” No, Stella.

Because of what the maid shows us. She’s a mirror. You don’t like what the house looks like in it. The difference is I want to fix the house. You want to break the mirror, Evie. I saw him that cheek 20 minutes. Daniel, help her. Diane, my study. Stella, give me an hour to find some polite words. Let’s get you some ice. ” Thank you.

” Look at you. Two years I couldn’t crack you. Two weeks of my son and you’ve brought my house down around my ears. Well, now I know what I’m dealing with. It’s not a maid. It’s a war. ” Hey. Look at me, not the floor. Me. Nobody is ever going to slap you again. Not in this house, not anywhere.

I don’t make promises I can’t keep. ” Daniel, you  can’t be everywhere. ” Watch me. ” He has fallen for her. Don’t argue, Diane. I know that look. I invented that look. ” Your father wore it in 1994. So, we go to Dad? ” No. Your father is a lost cause. Did you hear him tonight? Bravo. No. This is the girl. Everything was fine until her.

And she has the one weapon we can’t beat, the victim thing. The lowered eyes, the I don’t want to be a burden. And every day she stands there being wrong, your brother loves her more and hates us more. Before you know it, she’s the victim and we’re the villains. So, we flip the script. ” Flip it how? ” We make her the failure, not with slaps.

Slaps make martyrs. Mistakes, accidents, small, constant things that look like her incompetence and our patience until your father agrees she’s impossible, until Daniel himself sees that whatever he loves about her doesn’t survive real life. And we won’t even have to touch her ourselves.

And we give your brother somewhere else to look. A man in love with one woman is a wall. A man between two women is a door. ” What woman? Who in this town? ” I’m already ahead of you. Not this town. London. Richard Caldwell’s daughter, Jenny. She summered here twice and followed your brother like a lovesick collie, and she has grown up very well indeed.

” Mom, Daniel will never ” Daniel will never know what hit him. A family friend. A surprise visit. Engaged to be engaged. Everyone will say so, and when it reaches the maid’s ears, she will do the one thing a proud girl with nothing cannot help doing. She will walk away from him herself. Pride, Diane. Pride is a lever.

Hers is the longest one I’ve ever seen. Jenny, darling, it’s Stella Harrington. Oh, we’re wonderful. Listen, darling, Daniel’s home. And he asks about you constantly. ” You look good when you smile. ” You can’t just say things like that. I have to go back to being the maid in an hour, and you’ll still be you, and the words will sit in my chest all week like a swallowed fish bone.

” Then I’ll say them slowly, so you can digest. Tell me all of it. The accident, the family before here. Whenever you’re ready. ” My parents died when I was 19. Car accident on I-95 coming home from my mother’s birthday dinner. A truck crossed the median. I was in my second year at State. Accounting, if you can believe it.

” An accountant. I’d have trusted you with my taxes. ” Everyone trusted me. That’s the joke. My father had a little money, a house, some savings, a share in a supply business with his brother. My uncle became my guardian and the will became complicated. He said my father owed the business. He had papers.

I had a dorm room. By the time I found a legal aid lawyer, the house was sold and the money was relocated. That’s the word she used. “It happens every day, sweetheart.” she told me, like that was comfort. ” Evie. ” I dropped out. Couch to coach, then no couch. Then I got a job. Live-in housekeeping, the Mercers in the Heights.

The wife traveled a lot. The husband was home a lot. One night he came to my room with a key I didn’t know he had and told me a girl with no family should be realistic about her opportunities. I knee’d him where it counts and ran out the window, down the porch roof, barefoot in January with $41. No reference.

And no reference is a sentence all by itself. This house was the only place that would take me. Your mother knew that. The interview was four questions and three of them were, “Do you have anywhere else to go?” So, that’s why this job means everything to me. Not because it’s good, because it’s the last door. Everything behind me is closed.

” I’m going to say something and I need you to hear it as a fact, not a lie. As long as I’m on this planet, nobody lays a finger on you again. No keys in the night. No slaps. No hot pots. That’s not a promise. That’s a law. I’m passing it right now. One-man legislature. ” Daniel, you can’t. ” I can. I did.

It’s unconstitutional to appeal. ” [sighs] ” You’re a strange man. ” I’m the only normal one. It’s this town. This town is broken. ” This town raised you. London made you worse. You fold towels like a dying bird. ” You will never let the towel go. ” Never. It’s all I have. ” It’s not all you have. You should be running a company.

” I should be running the bleach. It doesn’t run itself. ” Weather’s turning. ” I’ll ring the bell. Bell’s ringing. ” Nothing but a photo ” Little room behind the laundry. [singing] ” She’s coming Saturday. ” Who’s coming Saturday? ” The guest. A dear family friend. The guest suite, fresh flowers, the good linen.

Ivy, you’ll cook something special Saturday, your best. We are hosting someone very important to this family’s future. Can you manage that or is excellence also against your principles? ” I can manage it, ma’am. ” Wear your cleanest apron, the white one. ” Who’s the guest, Mom? ” Eat your toast, darling. It’s getting cold. ” Dad, I want to make Ivy my wife.

” Well, it’s about time one of us said it out loud. ” Daniel, I eat dinner across from you every night. You watch her serve the potatoes like she’s reciting poetry. You threaten your mother over rice. You think because I’m old I’m blind? ” You think it’s crazy? ” I think it’s the sanest thing to happen in this house in years.

Intelligent, industrious, humble, and a very good cook, which your grandfather called the foundation of civilization. You have my support, 100%. ” Your mother will wage World War III. ” There’s a guest coming Saturday. I don’t know who, but the way she’s been purring all week, it’s a chess piece wearing perfume. She will call in favors.

She will summon relatives I haven’t heard from since the wedding. So, fight for her like a real man, not with shouting, with certainty and a plan. And Daniel, tell the girl, in this house, whoever speaks first owns the story. ” The guest Saturday,  any idea who? ” None. She smiled the whole time she ordered the menu.

She never smiles at menus. She smiles only at my misery. ”  ” Ow. Diane bought herself a bag last week, the Louis Vuitton tote. $5,000, Ivy. I saw the rag she gave you. She spent it, all of it, on herself.  ” It doesn’t matter. ” It matters to me. ” It doesn’t, though. Diane thinks she stole from me.

She doesn’t understand that every time she does something like this, you look at her a little less. She’s spending her brother’s money. Let her. I don’t mind at all. ” You just said something colder than anything my mother has ever said, in the sweetest voice I’ve ever heard. ” I’m an accountant. I understand appreciation. ” Okay, then let’s make a plan.

Meet me at the car in 40 minutes, the side gate. Tell no one. ” Daniel, if your mother finds out I left this house ” 40 minutes. Trust me. Let’s get tacos from the truck with the longest line. ” Accountants respect data. ” And roasted corn. ” barbecue truck. ” The turkey leg is a scam. It’s meat on a stick pretending to be a meal.

” It’s medieval. Kings ate these. ” Kings also had no plumbing. The taco is engineered. It respects the eater. You’re holding a turkey leg like a scepter. You look like a very small king. ” I am the king of this river walk. ” Your kingdom is a napkin dispenser. ” [laughter] ” Nobody in my house laughs like that.

Diane laughs like she’s being filmed. My mother laughs like she won something. You laugh like ” Like nobody’s going to deduct it from my wages. Evie baby, the world is mostly decent people having tired days. Never confuse a tired day with a bad heart, but never ignore a bad heart because of a tired day. ” That’s genuinely wise.

Which one is my mother? Don’t answer that. The corn will be cold. ” She’s gone. The pie for Saturday is half finished on the counter. Ivy has never left anything half finished in 2 years. Where is she, Raymond? Her room is empty. The gate show her leaving at 7:00 in her good blouse with her hair down. ” Dramatic.

Next you’ll tell me she was wearing shoes. ” Before you accuse her of going to meet some man ” I wasn’t going to accuse her of anything. But since you’ve brought it up before you accuse that girl of going out to meet a man, you might ask yourself one question. Where is your son? ” Let it not be what I’m thinking. LET IT NOT BE WHAT I’M THINKING.

” It is never what you’re thinking. It’s usually much better. ” I should go to my room. ” Come upstairs. 5 minutes.  I want to give you something. I know the world has broken you. I know what the Mercers’ husband did and what it cost you to be in this room. So hear me.

Nothing will ever happen in any room I’m in that you don’t choose. I will never force myself on you, never take advantage of you. You’ve been handled by life like an object. You’re not an object, you’re the whole museum. You need to trust someone eventually, or the bad men win. I’d like to apply for the position. No pressure.

Openings also exist for friend and guy who is bad at towels. ” You rehearsed that. ” For 3 days, in the shower, with hand gestures. It’s not a trap. There’s no receipt of obligation attached. It’s a bird. You remind me of a bird that landed somewhere awful and refused to stop being a bird. ” Daniel, I don’t know what to say. I can’t accept all this.

” You can. It’s not charity. Charity is what strangers give to feel good. This is what a man gives the woman he’s ” Say it. ” I don’t want you to be a maid anymore. Not here, not anywhere. I want you to be my woman. Openly, in front of my family, this town, whoever wants to stare. My feelings are genuine. This isn’t pity.

Pity doesn’t stay up rehearsing speeches in the shower. I’ve loved you since the crosswalk, since keep your money, possibly since the oranges. ” Daniel, hear me the way I heard you. I’m not a charity case. ” said. ” You didn’t, and that’s exactly why I have to say it. Tonight is the most beautiful thing anyone has ever done for me, and that terrifies me.

I’ve spent 5 years being nothing to everyone, and in 1 month you’ve made me feel like everything. If one day you wake up and realize it was pity, the rescue, the project, I won’t survive it. I’ve survived everything else, I won’t survive that. So, I need space. A few days. I need to make sure that when I reach for you, it’s a free woman reaching, and not a drowning one grabbing the only boat.

” Space. Okay. I’m bad at it, but for you I’ll practice. But, take the bird. It doesn’t save you from anything, it just sits on your neck and reminds you of me. Space. Great. Excellent. Love  space. ” Jenny, darling, look at you. Stella, you haven’t aged a day, it’s criminal. ” Daniel, your guest is here.

” The house is exactly the same. Where is he? Where’s Danny? ” Where’s Danny? ” Coming, coming. Jenny, before he gets here, I cannot tell you what it means that you’ve come. After all these years, everything you two have meant to each other, my son’s fiance finally under our roof. ” Stella, you’ll make me blush.

It’s not official official. ” Official is paperwork, darling. Everyone in London knows. Everyone here is about to. ” Well, when you put it like that. ” Jenny, nobody told me you were coming. ” I will not be anybody’s toy. I have nothing, ”  ” but I still have my pride. ” He sends me flowers every birthday.

Every single one. The man forgets nothing. ” Well, ” and when I had that awful flu last winter, soup appears at my flat from that place in Marylebone with a note for J from D. I kept the note, it’s in my wallet. Women keep the things that matter. And the suite for the Harrington gala next month, booked Danny under both our names.

” The suite is two rooms because Dad books adjoining rooms. ” Details. Each a roast. ” Miss Caldwell, forgive an old man’s confusion, but I hear you’re Daniel’s fiance. ” Well, ” does Daniel know he has a fiance? ” Dad, ” I’m told my son is engaged. I have not been told by my son. Flowers, soup, a suite with a wall in the middle, and yet the groom looks like a man watching a play about himself.

Miss Caldwell, whose idea was this dinner? ” Stella invited. ” Ah, there it is. This whole show has your fingerprints all over it, Stella. Even the soup. ” The soup was real. ” I’m sure it was, dear. Soup is the easiest prop. Excellent roast, by the way. Someone in this house can cook. ” Evie, hey, what’s ” Excuse me, sir. The coffee service.

” Sir, Evie, stop. Look at me. What did I do? ” Nothing, sir. You’re a man who does nothing wrong. Flowers every birthday. Soup in Marylebone. A suite for the gala. You’re a liar. That’s all. I don’t want anything from you. I’d like to keep the bird. I’ll pay you for it in installments after deductions. ” You want to pay me? What flowers? ” Her wallet has the note. For Jay from D.

I asked you for space to become a free woman. You gave me four days and a fiance. Do you know what the worst part is? I can’t even scream at you. I’m the maid. I have to go pour coffee for her. ” Flowers. Soup. A suite. Of course. Of course. ” [laughter] ” Remember the summer you taught me to dive? You said the trick is to jump before you’re ready.

I jumped on a plane this time, Danny. ” Jenny.  The flowers. ” Stella said you were shy about it. That you Oh, no. You didn’t send the flowers. ” I sent you flowers once the year your father was sick. The soup Marcus’ girlfriend worked near the soup place. I paid, she carried, she wrote the note. For Jay from D is Diane’s handwriting.

She borrowed my card. The suite has two bedrooms and a door between because my father booked it that way every year. I am not your fiance. There is no version of this week in which that becomes true. ” I look like an idiot. ” You look like a person my mother used. Half this town has been. There’s a support group.

We meet at the food trucks. ” The soup was really good soup. ” The soup was genuinely good soup. ” There’s someone in the house. You hold yourself like a man guarding a candle in the wind. Who is she? ” The woman your dinner was designed to destroy. ” Oh, Daniel. The maid. Stella pointed me at her like a Danny, I’m not a bullet.

I’ll go in the morning. ” You don’t have to. ” And you should tell her everything tonight. Women forgive a mess. We don’t forgive being left alone in it. ” She won’t talk to me. ” Then talk to the wall next to her until she does. You taught me to jump before I’m ready. For the record, I would have made a spectacular fiance.

Your mother’s taste is impeccable. Her ethics are a swamp. Yes, sir. No, sir. Will there be anything else, sir? ” Evie, I swear I had nothing to do with it. ” The kettle’s boiling, sir. ” Please, just listen. I can explain everything. ” No means no. I’m not fleeing like a criminal. ” Sleep well, Daniel. ” [gasps] [laughter] ” I could go.

Your son is embarrassing this family. Chasing the help, freezing out a wonderful girl. ” Your scheme is embarrassing this family. The girl is a prop and the help is a person. One day you’ll mix those up at the wrong moment and lose everything. ” I sleep like a baby. ” I know. That’s what frightens me. ” Let’s have a talk. Sister to servant.

My brother sees a poor girl who needs help. That’s the whole romance. You know what Daniel’s type was before you? Lawyers, models, a cellist. You’re a pity project, a rescue dog. He feels sorry for you the way people feel sorry for wet kittens. And the moment you’re dry, the moment you’re fixed, boring.

You remain a maid, act like one. Iron my dress, scrub my tub, stay in your lane. Or here’s a thought, just die. Problem solved. You know what I hear when you talk? Not cruelty. Cruelty is loud and simple like your mother. You’re different, you’re scared. ” Scared? Of you? ” Of me. Of the idea that a girl with nothing can make your brother look at you and see less.

You’ve had everything your whole life. The bags, the cards, the name, and you are starving, Diane. You and your mother both. You’re not angry that I’m reaching above my place. You both just hate that someone finally cares about me. You can’t stand that I’m being fed something you’ll never taste. Now move. Some of us work for a living.

Don’t. I’m not afraid of your hands anymore. That’s over. You did that. Thank you. Mom. Dad. I need you to tell me what this is. Because I rejected him and Raymond says the whole thing was staged and Jenny keeps looking at me like she’s apologizing and Daniel Daniel apologized to the back of my head for 45 minutes and he didn’t sound like a guilty man.

He sounded like a man who doesn’t know what he’s accused of. When she hugged him, I wanted to walk into that foyer and rip her arms off. Me, I wanted violence. Over a man I rejected. Is this jealousy? You can’t be jealous over something that isn’t yours. I made sure he isn’t mine. I was so careful and so proud and so stupid.

” I think I like him, Mom. ” [gasps and sighs] ” That’s all I can say out loud. Diane is wrong, wrong, wrong because when he looks at me, I don’t feel rescued. Okay. Tomorrow. If he still wants me, tomorrow I’ll be brave. ” Go be with Jenny. ” Good morning to you, too. ” I’m serious. She’s beautiful.

She has a passport and opinions. But Raymond says it was staged, and the math doesn’t add up, and I need to hear you say it because I’m about to do something terrifying, and I need the ground to be solid first. ” Jenny is a family friend, nothing more. There was never a fiance. My mother manufactured the whole dinner, borrowed my handwriting, my card, my reputation, and aimed it at you.

The flowers were Marcus’s girlfriend. The suite has a wall in it. The soup was real, and it was good soup, but it was soup. Ivy, soup is not a promise. Why didn’t anyone tell me I was engaged? I would have enjoyed my own engagement. Nobody invited the groom. ” Why didn’t you tell me? ” I tried. For 9 days, you went full ghost. Yes, sir. No, sir.

I narrated my entire innocence to the back of your head, and you offered me a kettle that wasn’t boiling. And you rejected me. I was giving you the space you asked for. But it’s you. It was always you. Say yes right now, and I’ll tell the whole world. I’ll hire one of those planes that writes in the sky. I am not ready to hide you, Ivy.

” It wasn’t boiling. I lied about the kettle. ” I know you lied about the kettle. ” I’m not ready for everyone to know, yet. Give me a little more time to grow legs for it. ” Then here’s the deal. I’m ready when you’re ready. One day, one month, I’ve clearly got a talent for waiting. But I need one thing first, and it’s not space.

Choose me, not the version where the skywriting convinces you. Me, the man who folds towels like roadkill. Just choose me, and let everything else be details. ” I choose you. ” What? ” I choose ” Wait, wait. I need witnesses. I need a notary. Is that a yes? Ivy, is that a yes? ” Daniel,  people will hear. ” Is that a yes? ” Yes! I’ve been waiting for  this all night.

” Me too. You look so beautiful. ” Kiss me. ” I love you. Hi. ” Hi. I checked for flaws while you slept. You snore like the laundry machine, the one with the belt problem. ” And yet you stayed. ” And yet I stayed. I still can’t believe I was your first. You’ve dated lawyers and a cellist. ” One cellist. ” And I was your first.

I keep waiting for the catch. ” No catch. I was waiting for the one person it would mean something with. Took 26 years and a crosswalk. You were the whole plan. ” That’s a terrible plan. ” It was a great plan. It worked. Stay 5 more minutes. Then I’ll create a diversion at the front stairs, fake a fall, very dramatic, and you take the back stairs.

” 5 minutes. Oh. Oh, this is better than the courtyard. This is better than everything. ” Miss Diane. You were in his room all night. You dirty little You climbed into my brother’s bed? Don’t grab me like that again. Not you. Not anyone. That era is over. You hit me, Mom. Mom, come in here. She’s sleeping with your son.

SHE SPENT THE NIGHT IN HIS ROOM AND SHE ATTACKED ME, MOM. YOU IN MY HOUSE. IN MY SON’S ROOM. ” MOM, I LOVE HIM. ” LOVE? ” WHAT’S GOING ON HERE? STOP. STOP, BOTH OF YOU. ARE YOU PEOPLE NORMAL? IVY. IVY, CAN YOU HEAR ME? CALL AN AMBULANCE. ” [panting and gasps] ” She fell. Raymond, she attacked Diane and she fell. ” SHE IS UNCONSCIOUS, STELLA.

” SHE FELL. TELL HIM. ” SHE FELL. ” Ganging up. Two of you. Somebody’s child in my hallway. Are you people normal? Are you human? ” DON’T YOU DARE LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT. THIS IS HER FAULT. CRAWLING INTO HIS BED AFTER EVERYTHING I DID to keep this family respectable. That’s why I brought Jenny from London to distract Daniel from this, to keep him away from her.

” What did you just say, Jenny? The fiancee. Manufactured  by you to break them up. Thank you, Stella. 26 years and you finally told me the whole truth about something. Ivy! Save some for later, son. ” WHICH OF YOU DID THIS? WHICH OF YOU? I WANT TO HEAR WHO PUT THEIR HANDS ON HER. WHO? ” DANIEL, you need to calm down.

” She is in a coma, Mom. THERE’S A MACHINE COUNTING HER HEARTBEATS. I WANT NAMES. Who hit her? ” She attacked me. I caught her sneaking out of your room and she attacked me. ” She pushed you. I heard it from the landing, all of it. She told you not to grab her, you shoved her, she pushed you off, and then you screamed for Mom like you’ve screamed for Mom your whole life.

And the two of you, she’s 120 lb, Diane. There were two of you. ” She is a maid WHO SEDUCED MY SON IN MY HOUSE. ” YOUR HOUSE? This is my house, too. And Dad’s. And until this morning, it was the house of the only person under this roof worth a damn, except that man right there.

You couldn’t break her with work or hunger or bricks, so you broke her head against the banister. Well, congratulations, it’s a crime now. I’m calling the police. ” You will not call the police ON YOUR FAMILY. ” YOU stopped being my family about an hour ago when you assaulted the woman I love. This is attempted murder, Mom. That’s what the doctors call a coma from a beating.

” Daniel, your sister ” My sister can explain it to a judge. She has a lovely wardrobe for court. ” Every action has consequences. ” MOM, DIANE, DON’T SAY ANYTHING UNTIL THE LAWYER. RAYMOND, RAYMOND, DO SOMETHING. ” I am doing something. I’m watching my daughter face the consequence of her actions. Ms. Caldwell, I think it’s time you went back to London.

” Mr. Harrington, I never I didn’t come here  for ” I know. My wife bought you a plane ticket and a costume. Go home. And Jenny, stop letting mothers borrow you. Yours are mine. ” Call the DA. You play GOLF WITH HIM. CALL THE GOVERNOR. YOU DONATED. I SAW THE CHECK. ” NO. ” RAYMOND, our daughter is in a cell.

” Then she should redecorate. She is where she supposed to be, Stella. I should have done this long ago, the day I first heard curse come out of your mouth at a 19-year-old orphan. I didn’t  because I was a coward in my own house. My son is not a coward. You encouraged all of this. Every slap Diane ever landed, she learned watching your hands.

And you still hasn’t asked how Ivy is. ”  ” Not once in six days. Starve yourself for all I care. Diane stays in that cell until Ivy comes out of the coma. That’s not cruelty. That’s justice. I’m told you’re fond of lessons. Learn this one. Thank you. She wakes, she decides. The girl earns the pen that writes the ending.

”  ” I understand. ” Ivy. ” Don’t. We’re not staying. I’ve packed. There’s a furnished apartment in the city, lease signed this morning. This house is too toxic to heal in. Dad, I’m sorry. I’ll visit, but we won’t sleep here again. ” Whatever you decide, son, as long as you find peace. ” Peace? Raymond, he’s leaving, Daniel.

My son, please don’t leave this house. Diane is gone, you’re going, I’ll be alone. ” Don’t call me your son for now. You didn’t behave like a mother. She’s been home 40 seconds  in a wheelchair with a bandage on her head that you put there and you said my name and Diane’s name and your own loneliness and you haven’t asked her how she’s feeling.

11 days and you never asked the hospital either, so no, not your son. ” Maybe someday when you find the woman from before the money, the one Dad married, introduce us. I’d like to meet her. ” Wait, how is Diane in jail? Your daughter, how is she? ” She’s She cries. She doesn’t sleep. She asks if you woke up.

Every visit, that’s the only thing she asks. ” Daniel, I want to talk to you alone. ” Whatever it is, we can do it after we leave. ” I want you to have Diane released. ” No. ” Daniel. ” No. She put you in a coma. Ask me anything else on this earth. ” I’m asking you this. ” Why? ” Because that’s the only way I’ll have peace of mind.

I had 11 days in that bed with nothing to do but think. If she sits in that cell because of me, then this family stays broken because of me and I become the thing your mother always said I was, the curse. I will not live inside her story. I won’t. ” She doesn’t deserve ” It’s not about what she deserves. I know about mercy, Daniel.

I know it better than anyone alive because I’ve needed so much of it. She’s your sister. She’s family. I’m sure she’s regretting it. Guilt like that is a jail of its own. We’re humans. We make these kinds of mistakes. ” Mistakes are forgetting birthdays, Ivy, not comas. ” And if she stays in that cell, every happy thing that ever happens to us will have her shadow on it.

Our wedding, our baby someday. I don’t want her shadow on my baby’s life. Let it in now, on my terms. And if nobody ever lets us out of our worst day, then nobody ever changes. The world just fills up with people serving time for the person they used to be. You saved me. Let me save her. That’s the only way any of this ends, with an ending I chose.

” You are a better person than everyone in this house combined. It’s infuriating. It’s the worst thing about you. ” Is that a yes? ” Fine. Today. But much later today. And I’m telling her exactly whose signature opened the door. Left to me, she’d grow white hair in there. Not us. Her.

You want to thank someone, thank her. She begged for your release, personally, this morning. Left to me, you’d have grown old in there. ” I was wicked.  I was wicked and cruel and jealous, and I had everything, every single thing, and I still couldn’t stand watching one person be kind to you. You pushed me off, and I screamed like you’d murdered me, and then I, with my own hands.

You don’t have to forgive me. Sorry is the smallest word there is. But if there’s a place, any place, the smallest corner, find a place in your heart someday to forgive me. Today, I just need you to know that I know what I am, and I’m done being it. ”  ” Stand up. We’re family, right? That’s what you all keep telling me.

So, stand up. Family doesn’t kneel. That’s the whole lesson. Nobody kneels. Not me on the brick, not you on the rug. Stand up. ” I’m sorry. I’m sorry. You were somebody’s child. You were somebody’s child the whole time, and I knew it. I’m sorry. ” I know. Make it mean something, and it’s enough. ” Sit down. This isn’t negotiable.

Sorry does not fix everything. It’s the beginning of fixing, and a beginning needs a backbone. 20% of your shares in the company, your grandfather’s shares, now belong to Ivy Carter. Signed, filed, done. Not a gift, a debt. ” Okay. that’s right. It should be hers. ” Until I see visible remorse, real remorse, the kind with actions attached.

When I see it, this comes back to you. It’s a door, not a wall. Walk through it correctly. ” Mr. Harrington, I can’t take this. I never wanted anyone’s things. ” I know. That’s why you’re the only person in this family I trust to hold them. Sit back down. Never feel entitled. That’s the lesson. Circumstances change.

You could be in her position tomorrow, Diane. The people at the bottom of the stairs today are the people at the top of them next year. And the only thing you carry between the floors is how you behaved on the way up. ” There’s one more thing. We’re not leaving. ” We’re not? ” This house is broken, but you don’t fix a house by leaving it empty.

And your father shouldn’t lose his son, and Diane shouldn’t  come home to a house of ghosts, and we need family. Especially now that  we’re expecting. ” We’re ” I’m pregnant. I found out at the hospital. I was going to tell you in the apartment. Surprise. ” You’re making ME A GRANDMOTHER! A GRANDMOTHER! That’s always been my dream, Raymond.

A baby! Oh, thank god! Oh, thank you! ” We’re not going anymore, Dad. We’re here to stay.  ” I heard. Twice, actually. Somebody write it down. I’m just saying the doctor said ” The doctor said normal life. You’ve cut my meat for me. I’m pregnant, not unconscious. ” The good china is retired for crimes against humility. ” But Ivy, you have to be careful.

” I will eat standing up. It’s a helmet for when he walks.  They fall constantly. The internet says so. ” The internet raised my daughter. It shows. ” The shares, Dad.  I’m not asking for them back. I work in the mail room, and I like the mail room, and nobody there cares what my last name is.

It’s the first honest thing I’ve ever owned. ” The shares are restored as of this morning. That’s what remorse looks like when it’s real. It stops auditioning. You keep the mail room job for a year because I enjoy telling people my daughter is the only Harrington who knows where anything is. And one final item of business, a fresh allocation, a new share account opened this morning  in the name of the unborn child, a small percentage, a small percentage above the father’s.

” Above the dad, he’s negative 3 months old. He can’t hold a pen. ” Never too early to build equity. ” Your son is richer than you. Your son is richer than you. ” Okay, settle down. He’s richer than all of us. A baby in this house. That’s the whole fortune. The rest is arithmetic. Eat my daughter, you’re eating for two.

And when you want to  rest, you rest. And if anyone in this house ever tells you otherwise, they answer to me. ” That’s new. ” That’s grandmother’s. ” The wedding is set  for spring. Hasten before the baby starts kicking the priest. Will you marry me? ” Yes, of course. ” I love you. ” I love you,  too.

” What are you thinking? ” That I used to wait for the sunrise in this kitchen. Every morning, alone, like it was the only  friend I had. And now I sleep through it. Because somebody’s keeping it for me.
