Title: My Husband Said His Mother Was Just Taking Our Baby for Fresh Air—Seconds Later, Police Surrounded a Black SUV
Part 2
Noah burst into tears the instant Linda carried him toward the front door.
She didn’t try to comfort him.
She only tightened her grip and hurried outside.
The tracker in his tiny knit hat pulsed once on the app hidden inside my phone.
Active. Moving.
I counted silently.
One…
Two…
Three…
Ryan looked up from the couch.
“You’re seriously going to let Mom babysit for ten minutes without acting like the world’s ending?”
I forced a smile.
“She just wants some fresh air.”
He shrugged and returned to his phone.
I walked into the kitchen, but instead of stirring the soup, I opened the surveillance app Detective Elena Ruiz had installed that afternoon.
A blue dot—Noah.
Another blue dot—Rachel’s SUV.
Then three unmarked police vehicles, spaced carefully behind them.
Everything was exactly where it should be.
For now.
Outside, Linda didn’t turn toward the neighborhood park.
She walked straight past it.
My stomach tightened.
According to her, she was only taking Noah outside.
So why was she heading toward the shopping district?
I watched the blue dot continue moving.
Ryan wandered into the kitchen.
“You’re really quiet.”
“Just tired.”
“You’ve been acting weird all week.”
I looked into his eyes, searching for even the smallest hint of guilt.
Instead, I saw irritation.
Nothing more.
Or perhaps he had become frighteningly good at pretending.
Five minutes later my phone vibrated.
Rachel: She’s heading to the Riverside parking garage. No stroller. Walking fast.
Another message arrived almost immediately.
Detective Ruiz: Units in position. Stay home unless I tell you otherwise.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
The invisible messages suddenly flashed again in front of my eyes.
The exchange will happen in less than ten minutes.
Do not warn Ryan.
Someone inside the house is already involved.
I froze.
Someone inside the house.
My eyes drifted toward Ryan.
He was typing rapidly on his phone.
Then deleting.
Typing again.
Finally, he smiled.
Not at me.
At whatever message had just appeared on his screen.
Across town, Linda entered the third level of the parking garage.
Rachel stayed nearly fifty yards behind, wearing sunglasses and carrying a shopping bag to avoid attention.
She whispered into the microphone hidden beneath her collar.
“Visual confirmed.”
A black SUV rolled slowly into an empty corner.
It stopped beside Linda.
The driver’s window lowered.
A heavyset man with gray hair stepped out.
Detective Ruiz immediately recognized him.
“That’s Dale Mercer.”
The man everyone had been trying to catch for nearly two years.
He looked at Noah the way someone might inspect expensive merchandise.
“How old?”
“Eight months,” Linda answered.
“Healthy?”
“Perfect.”
Noah cried harder.
Dale frowned.
“He looks attached to the mother.”
Linda laughed.
“He’ll forget her.”
Those four words made every detective listening clench their fists.
Inside our house, Ryan’s phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and immediately stood up.
“I’ll be right back.”
He stepped onto the back porch.
I quietly followed until I could hear his voice through the cracked door.
“Yeah?”
A pause.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Is she there?”
Another pause.
“No, Emily doesn’t suspect anything anymore.”
Every muscle in my body went numb.
Ryan continued.
“Just finish it today… and send my share tonight.”
My knees nearly gave out beneath me.
The final warning appeared before my eyes.
Your husband accepted $2,000.
The money is already waiting for him.
The arrest begins in sixty seconds.
