‘ She’s probably still outside performing charity for strangers. ‘ I apologize for the delay. My report is complete and ready. ‘ Your report may be ready, Maya, but clearly you are not. Should we first discuss why you arrived dressed for a flooded market? ‘  ‘ My appearance changed.

 The quality of my analysis did not. ‘ Then prove your figures deserve more attention than your entrance. ‘ That is exactly what I came here to do. The acquisition target overstated its value by 800 million naira. ‘ That is serious. Show the board how you reached that figure. ‘ They listed the same properties twice through separate subsidiaries.

‘ She is correct.  The source documents were designed to hide duplication. How long did  it take you to uncover something our advisers missed? ‘ Most of the night. The figures looked ordinary because they were meant to. ‘ Freeze the transaction. Verify every asset before anyone signs. ‘  ‘ I will begin immediately.

 Maya’s report may have saved us a fortune. ‘ One correct report will not erase how ridiculous  you look today. I am not asking anyone to erase it. I know why  I did it. Find out everything about Maya Benson, but let  no one know. ‘ Yes, madam. I will have a complete report before morning. ‘ She surrendered  comfort before she knew whether I could repay her.

‘ Most people  would have called security and continued walking. She supports her mother and a younger sister awaiting  major surgery. ‘ And she still gave away the only good shoe she owned. Call Lawson. My son is about to learn a lesson he cannot purchase. ‘ Will Mr.

  You have no right to touch me. David, Maya arrived in your car. Has the transport policy changed?  ‘ Her transport is now my concern. Return to your department. ‘ Give Maya every regional audit and demand the report by tomorrow. That workload normally takes a full team almost 2 weeks.

 Then tomorrow will prove she is not as brilliant as everyone thinks. ‘  ‘ Vanessa wants every discrepancy listed before tomorrow morning. Tell her I received the files. I will send questions in writing. ‘  ‘ This is not  an assignment. It is a carefully arranged failure. ‘ Then I will document the arrangement before I solve the failure.

‘ I asked for records, not for you to fight my battles. ‘ Must every kind  act toward you become an insult? ‘ Kindness with suspicion behind it is only another form of control. Let us see how dignified she looks when every camera turns. The note says business casual, madam. Should I bring another option? No.

 I will follow the written instruction exactly as it was sent. You came to a gala dinner dressed for a Monday budget meeting. ‘  ‘ I wore the dress code your office sent. I kept the message. You probably misunderstood.  Not everyone belongs in rooms like this. ‘ She understood perfectly.

 Your office sent the wrong instruction. Maya, you are seated beside me.  Why did you interrupt that meeting? ‘ I do not  need permission to speak with an employee in my company. ‘ You interrupted because I smiled at Victor. ‘ That is disappointing. I was prepared to negotiate the sugar. ‘ How is Rachel? I am asking, not investigating. ‘ She is stable. The doctors believe the surgery can still succeed. ‘ I judged you because I have met too many people who wanted access. ‘ And I distrusted you because men with power rarely admit they are wrong.

‘ I was wrong about why you signed. ‘  ‘ I may be wrong about more. ‘ Then learn slowly. Fast apologies often disappear faster. ‘  ‘ I only promised to look. I did not promise to become a thief. ‘  ‘ One year, she is not a wife. She is a rented performance. David paid her to enter his house.

 The board will destroy them both. ‘ [laughter] ‘ You only win because you change the rules when you start losing. ‘ That accusation  sounds suspiciously like fear of defeat. ‘ Smile while you can, Maya. Your marriage will die before the whole city. ‘ This contract brought her here. But now  it is keeping her from choosing me.

You understand that ending this agreement may also give Maya reason to leave. ‘  ‘ If freedom takes her away, then holding her here was never love. For once, you  are making a choice without your mother forcing your hand. For once, I am asking Maya for nothing she cannot freely refuse. ‘ You look like no one in that ballroom could ever make you feel small.

People feel powerful in ballrooms because nobody  sees what frightens them. You have been afraid all day. Tell me what is following you tonight. I made a mistake, madam. I only pray I can correct it before it reaches you. ‘ I prepared something charming to say, but none of it is good enough now. ‘ Then protect yourself from embarrassment and say only what is true.

 My sister’s survival had a price. My dignity was never yours to measure. Protect the company, David. I have survived humiliation without you before. ‘ I spent years protecting the company. Tonight, I will protect the truth. ‘  ‘ The contract began our marriage, but it did not create what I feel for Maya. ‘ You cannot love a woman who entered your house because she was paid.

‘ Maya was not rewarded for one umbrella. She was tested every day by power. ‘ Maya exposed false vendors, protected acquisitions, and preserved every record. ‘ I protected my work because it was right,  not because I expected a reward. That is why any reward placed in your hands has a chance of remaining clean.

‘ You altered instructions, withheld files, and manipulated internal company records. ‘ I challenged an employee who received access nobody else was ever given. Vanessa paid me to open David’s safe and photograph the marriage contract. ‘ You accepted that money willingly. Do not stand there pretending innocence.

‘ I kept every message because I feared  she would blame everything on me. Your confession does not erase your betrayal, but  the truth still matters. ‘ Vanessa Reed, your employment and every company privilege end tonight. ‘ You cannot erase everything I built because Maya once gave you shoes.

David,  remember what we were before this woman entered your life. ‘ We ended because you loved the position beside me more than you loved me. ‘ She stole EVERYTHING THAT BELONGED TO ME, AND SHE WILL TAKE EVERYTHING FROM YOU. ‘ Nothing honest  ever belonged to you simply because you wanted it.

‘ [laughter] ‘ I transferred my controlling 51% stake into  a trust in your name. You gave me control of this company without asking whether I wanted it. You may refuse it. Power forced upon you would repeat my first mistake. Then give me time to understand every duty before I accept any power. Do not let this ballroom pressure me into another decision about my life.

‘  ‘ I will ask once, and you may answer when nobody else is watching. I do not want another contract. I want the chance to earn your choice. ‘  ‘ You learned to value me only after your mother proved I had value. Stand beside me, David. Love should not begin with one person beneath another. ‘ Then let me stand beside you while my actions repair what my judgment damaged.

‘ Everyone decided something about my life tonight without first asking me. ‘ And none of us stopped to ask what surviving our decisions would cost you. ‘ The contract ends tonight. Whatever remains between us must begin  honestly. ‘ Then tomorrow I begin again without using my name or wealth to hold you.

‘  ‘ I came to ask what you need, not to tell you what happens next.  ‘ I need one day without anyone arranging my future behind closed doors. ‘ Take every day you need. The house, the company, and I will wait. ‘ The company cannot wait for feelings. I will review its position today. ‘ We saw everything.

  They exposed your marriage before the whole country. The immediate problem  is confidence, not liquidity. Maya will address the company because the public attack was directed at her.

‘ I will address the facts. The board may decide what follows after  that. I have not accepted the controlling shares, and I will not use them today. ‘ Then on what authority are you speaking before  this board? ‘ The authority of evidence. These figures show the company remains secure. ‘  ‘ Every figure has been verified by finance, legal, and external auditors.

‘ We publish the audited truth, protect employees, and face every investor openly.  ‘ That approach exposes uncomfortable details the company could legally conceal. ‘ Vanessa  used secrecy as a weapon. We will not defend ourselves with more secrecy. ‘ Finance, legal, and communications will follow Maya’s recovery plan.

I move that Maya lead the recovery committee until the trust is reviewed. ‘ I will lead the work, but my appointment must end when the crisis does. You saw a private contract used to shame both an employee and this company. No employee should need wealth, marriage, or influence before receiving dignity. The rules must protect the least powerful person, not flatter the most powerful.

‘ The executive office accepts that standard and will be judged by it. ‘ Senior staff ignore complainants when the person reporting earns less than them. Then every complaint will receive a number, a deadline, and a written answer. ‘ The executive budget will fund the reforms without reducing staff benefits.

‘ Put it in writing before anyone thanks you for making a promise. I deserve to lose this job, but I needed to apologize before I leave. You entered a private room, stole a document, and sold my humiliation. ‘ Keep the kindness in your My son’s face frightened me, but fear did not force my hand into that safe.

The surgery was successful. Rachel is stable and responding as expected. Can I see her now, even if she is still sleeping? You look like you have been fighting everybody while I was sleeping. You woke up, so I have  finally won the only fight that mattered. I came without lawyers, guards, or documents because none of them can apologize.

An apology cannot return the choices you took from me. I cannot return them. I can only stop believing my intentions excuse the harm. ‘  ‘ Then allow me to decide what relationship remains between us. These belong to you before anyone decided your kindness deserved a reward. They remind me of the woman I was before all of you started testing  her.

I will accept the trust only if it’s control becomes accountable to the board. ‘  ‘ You would weaken the authority I placed entirely in your hands. No person should hold enough power to use other lives as private experiments. You are using my own gift to prevent anyone from becoming like me. ‘ The controlling shares now carry safeguards, oversight,  and removal provisions.

‘ Then I accept the responsibility, not the right to rule without question. ‘ When the rain falls  You have added more restrictions to my office than the entire board ever attempted. ‘ You spent years without enough restrictions. Consider this delayed supervision. ‘ I kept expecting change to make you trust me.

 It only showed me how trust works. ‘ Trust began when you stopped changing only because you wanted something from me. You brought me back to the place where everybody first decided who I was. ‘ I brought you here because this is where you decided who you would remain. You gave these away before you knew kindness would ever return to you.

‘ I gave them because an old woman was about to fall into  traffic. ‘ I love you without a contract, inheritance, audience, or order from my mother. ‘ And what happens when loving me becomes difficult again?  ‘ Then I will choose honesty when pride feels easier and patience when fear returns.

‘ That is the first proposal you have made that sounds like a real marriage. ‘ Maya Bensen, will you choose me when nobody has ordered either of us? ‘ Yes, David. This time I am choosing the man and not surviving the contract. ‘ I promise never to confuse loving you with having the right to control you.
