She noticed me almost immediately.” “What happened?” Blessing folded her arms tightly. “She panicked.” The answer surprised him. “Panicked?” “Not annoyed. Not angry.” “Terrified.” Blessing’s voice became quieter. “She begged me not to follow her.” Pastor Abel frowned. “Did she say why?” “No.” “She just kept saying, ‘Please… if you’re kind, let me go alone.'” Silence settled between them. Emmanuel finally shrugged. “Maybe she’s escaping an abusive husband.” Blessing slowly shook her head. “I’ve worked with abused women before.” “This felt different.” “She wasn’t afraid of one person.” “She looked afraid of being found.” For the rest of the afternoon, Pastor Abel tried to focus on paperwork. Baptism requests. Wedding schedules. Hospital prayer visits. Nothing stayed in his mind. Again and again he saw Ruth sitting alone in the last row. Those frightened eyes. Those protective hands over her unborn child. By evening he had made up his mind. Next Sunday… he would follow her. Not to invade her privacy. Not out of curiosity. Only to make sure she arrived home safely. That was what he kept telling himself. The following Sunday came with heavy gray clouds. Rain threatened but never fell. The service ended just after noon. Just as before… Ruth stood before the final prayer had finished. She slipped quietly through the side exit. Pastor Abel waited exactly thirty seconds. Then he handed his Bible to Emmanuel. “I’ll be back shortly.” Outside, Ruth was already halfway down the road. She walked surprisingly fast despite her pregnancy. She never looked behind her. Not once. Instead… she kept checking reflections. Store windows. Parked cars. Glass bus shelters. Anyone watching closely would think she was simply looking around. But Pastor Abel recognized the pattern immediately. She wasn’t sightseeing. She was making sure nobody was following. He stayed nearly fifty meters behind. Far enough not to alarm her. Close enough not to lose sight of her. They crossed three busy streets. Passed an open-air market. Walked beyond the neat neighborhoods surrounding the church. Gradually the buildings changed. Fresh paint disappeared. Roads narrowed. Drainage ditches overflowed. Children played barefoot beside broken fences. The air smelled of smoke and stagnant water. Finally Ruth turned into an old settlement Pastor Abel had only driven past before. Tin roofs. Cracked walls. Rusted gates. Stray dogs sleeping beneath abandoned vehicles. She never slowed. Until she reached the very last compound at the end of a dirt road. An old rust-colored metal gate stood before it. Almost hidden beneath climbing vines. Ruth stopped. Looked left. Looked right. Then knocked. Not normally. Three quick knocks. Pause. Two slow knocks. Another pause. One final knock. A pattern. The gate opened only a few inches. Someone inside looked out. Pastor Abel couldn’t see the person’s face. Only a hand. After a few seconds… the gate opened just wide enough for Ruth to slip inside. Then it shut immediately. Locked. Pastor Abel remained where he was. His heartbeat had begun to race. Why would someone need a secret knock… just to enter their own home? He was about to leave. This had already gone farther than he intended. Then… he heard it. A scream. Not loud. Not long. But unmistakable. A woman’s scream. It came from somewhere inside the compound. Then silence. Pastor Abel froze. Another sound followed. A heavy metallic bang. Then a baby crying. Then… nothing. Every instinct told him to call the police immediately. His hand reached for his phone. But before he could dial… the gate opened again. Two enormous men stepped outside. Both dressed entirely in black. One carried a wooden crate. The other slowly scanned the empty road. Pastor Abel quickly stepped behind a broken delivery truck parked nearby. The men remained outside for nearly a minute. Watching. Listening. Searching. Finally they went back inside. The gate slammed shut. Pastor Abel waited another five minutes before quietly approaching. The compound looked abandoned. No signs. No company name. No family photographs. Nothing. Only the rusted gate. As he turned to leave… something caught his eye. Lying beside the drain… half-covered in mud… was a small silver pendant. He picked it up carefully. The front showed a tiny cross. The back had words scratched by hand. “To Ruth and our little miracle. — Daniel.” Pastor Abel stared at the engraving. Someone loved her. Someone had been waiting for that baby. Then why… was she hiding like a prisoner? Just as he slipped the pendant into his pocket… a deep voice spoke behind him. “Pastor…” His blood ran cold. Slowly… he turned around. One of the men in black was standing only a few feet away. Smiling. “You’ve been asking a lot of questions…” The smile widened. “…and that’s becoming very dangerous.”
